The Roger Varian-trained Gold Wand (3 f ex Los Ojitos by Mr. Greeley) ran out a ready winner of the Sir Henry Cecil Stakes (Listed, 1m4f) at York on Thursday and in the process became the third stakes winner for Darley Stud-based sire Golden Horn (Cape Cross).

Last seen running second in the Lyric Stakes (Listed, 1m2¼f), the three-year-old filly went one better on Thursday, beating Vivionn (Dubawi) by a length and three-quarters with Award Scheme (Siyouni) a further length and a quarter back in third.

The filly is out of three time-winning Los Ojitos (Mr Greeley), who was also placed at Listed level and Gold Wand becomes the first stakes winner in three generations of her family.

The filly’s fourth dam is Careless Kitten (Caro), who in turn produced Group 2 winner Arkadian Hero (Trempolino) and Listed scorer Adversarial (Fit To Fight), while she is also the grandam of Grade 2 winner Hiraboku Deep (Deep Impact).

Gold Wand joins Group 3 winner West End Girl and Listed scorer Festive Star as Golden Horn’s other stakes winners. Winner of the 2015 Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f), the son of Cape Cross (Green Desert) retired to stud in 2016 and he stands at Darley’s Dalham Hall, where his fee in 2020 was advertised as £40,000.
