The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Alignak (4 c ex Albanova by Alzao) continued on his steep upwards trajectory when he landed the Stand Cup Stakes (Listed, 1m4.5f) at Chester on Saturday and in the process handed Sea The Moon (Sea The Stars) his 11th stakes winner.

The four-year-old colt came into the race off the back of a fine fourth place finish in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4½f) at Newbury on August 15 and he was able to build on that performance, beating Morando (Kendargent) by a length. Hereby (Pivotal) finished another four and a quarter lengths away in third.

Alignak is out of three-time Group 1 winning champion stayer Albanova (Alzao), making him a half-brother to Newbury Arc Trial Stakes (Gr 1m3f) winner Algometer (Archipenko), Listed-winning duo All At Sea (Sea The Stars) and Alwilda (Hernando), who in turn produced Listed winner and Group 1-placed filly Alpinista (Frankel).

Further back the colt’s second dam is Listed winner Alouette (Darshaan) - the dam of dual Group 1 winner Alboranda (Alzao), who in turn produced ATC Festival Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) winner My Nordic Hero (Archipenko).

Sea The Moon’s progeny is headed by this year’s Coronation Stakes (Gr 1, 1m)-winning mare Alpine Star and he stood at Lanwades Stud in Newmarket for a fee of £15,000 in 2020.
