The Mark Johnston-trained Desert Boots (2 g ex City Chic by Street Cry) got off the mark at his fourth attempt when he landed a race over seven furlongs at Lingfield on Wednesday and in the process became the 15th first-crop winner for Haunui Farm shuttler Belardo (Lope De Vega).

The two-year-old gelding stayed on strongly to beat Cuban Cigar (Havana Gold) by a neck, while Decadent (Mehmas) was another length and a quarter away in third.

The gelding is out of the winning Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare City Chic and she is herself a sister to Discourse - the dam of Listed winners Hadith (New Approach) and Discursus (Dubawi).

City Chic is also the dam of Grade 1 winner Bandini (Fusaichi Pegasus), while she is also the grandam of Grade 1 scorer Out For A Spin (Hard Spun) and Listed-scoring Sweet Victory (Blame) and Ferdinanda (Giant’s Causeway) and this year’s Prince Of Wales’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) winner Lord North (Dubawi).

Further back this is the same family as Grade 1 scorer Hail Atlantis (Seattle Slew) - the dam of Listed-winning pair Mr Katowice (Katowice) and Stormy Atlantic (Storm Cat), with the latter now a successful sire in America.

Belardo’s progeny is headed by stakes-winning quartet Isabella Giles, Lullaby Moon, Elysium, Belloccio and Avonallo, who won the Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) Riccarton last month. Belardo stands at Haunui Farm for a fee of NZ$10,000 (plus GST).
