A breeding right to leading first season sire Ardad (Kodic) topped the Tattersalls Online - 29th June auction when bought for 52,000gns by Whatton Manor Stud’s Ed Player.

Trained by John Gosden, Ardad won the Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Royal Ascot in 2016 and added the Flying Childers Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) later that year. He retired to Overbury Stud for a fee of £6,500 in 2018 and stood this year for a fee of £4,000.

The son of Kodiac (Danehill) sits at the head of the leading first season sires table in Europe by winners, having notched up 13 so far and by prize money, he is just £1,000 behind Cotai Glory (Exceed And Excel).

“I’m delighted that the breeding right has been bought by as successful a commercial breeder as Whatton Manor Stud. It is a tremendous endorsement of what Ardad’s first crop have achieved so far,” said Simon Sweeting of Overbury Stud.

The breeding right had been entered as a wildcard for the sale.

Overall 29 lots sold for 274,300gns, at an average of 9,459gns and median of 4,200gns.

After the conclusion of the Tattersalls Online June 29th Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“Tattersalls Online has quickly established itself as Europe’s leading online platform and the catalogue for the Tattersalls Online June 29th Sale was the largest yet, reflecting the confidence that both vendors and buyers have in our online product. We were delighted to be the first online platform in Britain or Ireland to host the sale of a breeding right and we are confident that the sale of the breeding right to Ardad will be the first of many that we offer on Tattersalls Online.”

The next sale to be held on the Tattersalls Online platform will be held on August 17 with the closing date for entries on Tuesday, August 3.
