Galileo Closing On Danehill's Record

Champion Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien completed the classic double at Newmarket on Sunday when Galileo filly Hermosa won the 1000 Guineas.

After winning his tenth 2000 Guineas on Saturday for Coolmore with the Invincible Sprit colt Magna Grecia it was business as usual when Hermosa became the 76th G1 winner by the stud’s champion sire Galileo.

Hermosa, runner-up in last season’s G1 Fillies’ Mile, proved too strong from the front, staying on stoutly to beat Lady Kaya (Dandy Man) and favourite Qabala (Scat Daddy).

Galileo is also the dam sire of 2000 Guineas winner Magna Grecia and is rapidly closing in on Danehill's record of 84 G1 winners worldwide.

“What can you say about Galileo. His influence is going to be for ever and ever,” O’Brien said.

“The boss (John Magnier) always says it’s all about the blood and the pedigree and that’s what we were following.

“I’d say the Oaks is what she’s going to love, but the Irish Guineas is there to have a look at as well.

“She’s tough, very uncomplicated and like her sister she stays well.”

Hermosa is the third winner of the 1000 Guineas by Galileo joining other Coolmore fillies Minding and Winter[.

She is also the third G1 winner produced by her dam Beauty Is Truth (Pivotal), being a sister to the imported Ranvet Stakes winner The United States and UK classic winner Hydrangea.

The mare has also produced Fire Lily (Dansili), Ireland’s champion three-year-old female sprinter of 2012.
