Arrowfield Dynasty Goes From Strength To Strength

Redoute's Choice and his outstanding sire sons were among the big stories of 2016 and they ended the year with a final flourish last weekend.

Redoute's Choice is already shaping future generations through 17 stakes-siring sire sons headed by Snitzel (47 SW), Not A Single Doubt (35 SW) and the deceased Stratum (31 SW).

Ireland resident Elzaam and New Zealand-based Burgundy seem likely to join that group soon, after making very favourable impressions with their first runners in 2016.

Scissor Kick's arrival at Haras d'Etreham in France strengthens the dynasty's foothold in Europe as Redoute's Choice's own second crop of French-conceived 2YOs prepares to race in 2017.

Not A Single Doubt and Snitzel made a big impact on 2016 racing with 27 winners of 44 Group and Listed Races between them.

They sit third and fourth on the current Australian Sires' list with collective prizemoney of almost $10 million and have 79 of their yearlings on offer at the Magic Millions Sale at the Gold Coast next week.

Of course the pillar of consistent top-class performance is Redoute's Choice, proven yet again in 2016 to extend his sequence of siring double-figure stakeswinners including at least one G1 winner every year since 2004.

Over the past two years he has averaged a stakes win every 17 days and in 2016 the three-time Australian Champion Sire put up 15 individual winners of 19 Group and Listed Races.

Among them were G1 winners Peeping (Coolmore Classic), Howard Be Thy Name (South Australian Derby) and Abbey Marie (Australasian Oaks), taking his tally of lifetime G1 winners to 30.

In 2016 his Group winners Honesty Prevails and Thyme For Roses and Listed winners Zamzam and Table Bay boosted Redoute's Choice's tally of 2YO stakeswinners to 33.

Daughters of Redoute's Choice are similarly proving their worth as transmitters of his class, with 50 stakeswinners (14 of them in 2016) including G1 winners Sacred Falls, Zoustar, Pasadena Girl and Stay With Me.

The highlight for the Redoute’s Choice dynasty last weekend was the stunning wining debut by Not A Single Doubt filly From Within at Canterbury.

A 2YO daughter of the Anabaa mare Zimaretto, the Chris Waller-trained filly is Magic Millions bound after she beat trio of Snitzel youngsters in a parade of Arrpwfield Stud produced youngsters by sons of Redoute’s Choiuce.

From Within beat the Snitzel colts Invader and Chauffeur and Snitzel filly Exceeds, with her winning margin of 1.25 lengths flattering to the opposition as it could have been considerably more after she was eased down in the closing stages.

Her next start wil be in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast on January 14 with Chris Waller she is much like Not A Single Doubt's 2011 Magic Millions winner Karuta Queen.

"She's a ready-made two-year-old. She has speed, manners, knows that to do, relaxes and switches off,” Waller said.

Snitzel later produced a wining double at Canterbury with wins by Spending To Win and Le Cordon Bleu in the feature $150,000 Canterbury Classic 1200m.

Le Cordon Bleu’s win in the Listed race made him the 47th stakes winner sired by Snitzel.

Spending To Win, a grey son of the Invincible Spirit mare Madame Trop Vite, secured a strong maiden success on his return from tie-back surgery when he won the 1100m event in class record time.

Sadly the race was marred by the fatal breakdown of Weatherly, a grandson of Redoute’s Choice by Beneteau trained at Arrowfield by Paul Messara.

Weatherly, a stakes winner at Flemington last season and having only his fourth race start, had to be euthanased after fracturing his near-fore sesamoid about 600m after the start.

His death compounds the loss of Beneteau who died almost three years ago and has left 20 stakes performers from 91 runners.

Le Cordon Bleu, from the Gold Fever mare Ultimate Fever has now won five of his 16 starts for prizemoney of almost $350,000.

At Gosford Corumbene Stud's promising 3YO Treviso gave Snitzel another win. Treviso won at Gosford on debut last June before finishing third behind top class paqir Russian Revolution and Morton's Fork at Randwick.

The New Year started as it finished for Snitzel when he chalked up his first stakeswinner for 2017 on January 1 when his son Odyssey Moon won the G3 Standish Handicap at Flemington.

Trained by Robert Smerdon for Belinda Bateman, dyssey Moon was bred by the Arrowfield/Jungle Pocket partnership and was originally purchased for $25,000 as a yearling. He was subsequently re-sold for $120,000 as a 2YO to agent James Harron.

His dam Run To The Moon (Arch) is a half-sister to the dual US G1 winner Jostle and was sent to Arrowfield in 2005 by Katsumi Yoshida.

She is now owned by Aquis Farm and is again in foal to Snitzel.

As a juvenile Odyssey Moon was a Listed winner at Randwick when prepared by Scone trainer Rod Northam before dead-heating for second in the G1 ATC Sires' Produce Stakes.

He is now the winner of four races and has placed eight times in black type company for earnings of more than $720,000.

Snitzel was represented by another Flemington winner on Sunday when the 3YO colt Snitzson took his record to three wins from five starts.
