Begg Family Writes New Chapter For Boom Sire

Exciting colt Written By wrote a new chapter in the ever- growing success story that is his sire Written Tycoon when he dominated the $1.5 million Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

The Graham Begg-trained Written By provided Written Tycoon with his fifth Group One winner when he came from a wide barrier to run away with Victoria’s richest two-year-old race and extend his unbeaten record to three wins.

Written By (Written Tycoon x Yau Chin by Tobougg) had easily won the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at his previous start and was more impressive stepping up to 1200m, defeating Enbihaar by two and a half lengths to give former Sydney trainer Begg his first G1 success since he relocated to Victoria in 2016.

Queensland-bred Written Tycoon, a son of the late sire Iglesia, stands in Victoria at Woodside Park after a racing career that was groomed by Graham Begg as a 2YO and early 3YO in 2005.

Written Tycoon won two of his first seven starts for Begg including the G2 Todman Stakes before he was transferred to fellow Randwick trainer John O’Shea. He went to race only four more times for one placing before his retirement.

At stud Written Tycoon’s achievements have far surpassed his racing record. They include being Australia’s Champion First Season Sire in 2010/11; Champion 2YO Sire in Australia in 2015/16; and Champion Victorian Sire in 2015/16.

His life-time winners to runners percentage is over 70%; his progeny are led by the G1 winners Capitalist, Music Magnate, Tycoon Tara and Luna Rossa; and his books have grown year on year to the extent that he covered 166 mares in 2017 on a fee of $88,000.

Capitalist, retired with world record earnings for a 2YO, is now at stud along with Written Tycoon’s other notable Group-winning sons Rich Enuff and Winning Rupert.

Earlier this month Written Tycoon’s deeds went to a new level when he sired seven metropolitan winners in one weekend around Australia including three Group winners.

Those seven included Written By, a family horse if ever there was one as he was bred and is raced by Graham Begg’s father, the now retired Hall of Fame trainer Neville Begg, and his mother Yvonne.

Now 87, Neville Begg has been breeding horses for over 50 years but until Saturday had never bred a juvenile G1 winner.

“It’s so exciting. I’ve been breeding horses for 50 years but to breed my first 2YO G1 winner is a big thrill for me and Yvonne and the family,” said the former champion trainer.

Begg purchased Written By’s dam Yau Chin (Tobougg) from the Scone Select Yearling Sale for a mere $3000 in 2007.

Written By is her fourth foal to race and all are winners.

Written By was offered for sale as a yearling but was retained by the Begg family when he was passed in at $180,000 - $20,0000 shy of his reserve - at last year’s Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. There are 47 yearlings by Written Tycoon nominated for next week’s Melbourne Premier Sale.

The mare Yau Chin is out of Tillia’s Daughter (Umatilla) and is a half-sister to two winners. Leading international sire Pins features further back in the family.
