Will it be the case of third time lucky for 'Louis'

THIS will be the third successive year that Cobbitty-based gelding Spirit Of St Louis has contested a Garrards Miracle Mile.

The seven-year-old qualified for the famous sprint by finishing second to Speak The Truth in last Saturday night's Cordina Group Sprint at Tabcorp Park Menangle.

And it is yet another runner in the rich event for trainer Luke McCarthy, who created history with his champion King Of Swing by winning the Mile three times in a row from 2020 to 2022.

Despite not having a drive in Saturday night's feature, McCarthy will watch from the grandstand as Spirit Of St Louis ' regular driver Jack Callaghan takes the reins on the consistent pacer, who will start from gate two.

'Louis' as he is affectionally known, will be seeking to go a step closer to winning after finishing second behind King Of Swing and Catch A Wave in the past two stagings.

Following the barrier draw, without hesitation McCarthy declared Callaghan would be driving the gelding, who he believes could not be in better shape.

"His run in Saturday night's qualifier was super," said McCarthy.

"We opted to drive him a little more aggressively, with Jack pushing forward and retaining the lead and after setting a fast pace he was brave, only being collared in the last 50 metres.

"It will be somewhat different for me this year watching from the stands, but Jack has a great relationship with this horse, and he deserves to retain the drive tomorrow night."

It will be another busy night for the McCarthy stable having leading chances in the feature races on what is a fantastic program at Tabcorp Park Menangle.

Star trotter Constantinople is one of the favoured runners to take out the Hammerhead Trotters Mile, while Luke will have a two-pronged attack on the New South Wales Derby with Chicago Bart and Ravishing Sloy.

Expensive Ego was strong when running fourth last weekend and is a leading chance in the Australian Light Horse Free- For-All while consistent mare Its Ebonynivory has drawn well in gate one for the Baby Bling Stakes.
