After missing an autumn campaign, Berkeley Square is set to resume at Flemington.
Trainer Dan O'Sullivan is looking forward to the second spring campaign of his lightly raced galloper Berkeley Square.
A winner of four of his seven starts, the now four-year-old will have his first start since last October when he runs in the VRC Dennis Foley Sprint (1410m) at Flemington on Saturday.
Berkeley Square won at the corresponding meeting last year and O'Sullivan joked he was Melbourne's lead trainer for a short period.
O'Sullivan set Berkely Square for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and Victoria Derby (2500m) last spring, finishing fourth and sixth respectively, with a win in the Group 2 Moonee Valley (2040m) in between those efforts.
With plenty to look forward to in the autumn, connections were left disappointed when the gelding required surgery after a paddock injury last spring.
"When he first went to the paddock, we spelled him with shoes on because the ground had been so wet," O'Sullivan said.
"He pulled a shoe off, stepped on a nail and got an infection in his pedal bone that needed a bit of surgery and it put him out for the autumn."
O'Sullivan said Berkeley Square could have been back racing earlier than Saturday but decided with the potential of a long spring ahead, another break, after some early work, would be more beneficial.
"The injury has healed up without a problem and he's now good to go," O'Sullivan said.
Melbourne Cup winning jockey Jye Mcneil replaces Craig Williams on Berkeley Square.
McNeil rode Berkely Square in a jump-out on the course proper at Ballarat a couple of weeks ago.
"He was a bit slow out, which I think was because he was a bit ring-rusty, but he found the line well and the trial has brought him on," O'Sullivan said.
"He's a very good horse and hopefully he gets a clear run, but he's going there with only one jump-out.
"With, hopefully, a long spring ahead of him he will get benefit out of it and the 1400 metres is probably the shortest that he wants these days."
O'Sullivan said Berkely Square, with his rating could be a Caulfield Cup lightweight hope while he will also be entered for the Cox Plate.
"Everything is on the table," O'Sullivan said.
"We'll work our way through it and see how each run goes. I've looked ahead but haven't locked anything in.
"No doubt if he wins on Saturday, I'll be getting plenty of advice."
