There are three Group 1 races at Randwick on Saturday, but there is also plenty of interest in the support card, including the first two-year-old races run in Sydney this season.

The $250,000 Group 3 Breeders' Plate (1000m) is the race for colts and geldings, drawing a field of 14, most of whom trialled on the Kensington track at Randwick on September 18.

Below is a brief overview of their breeding profile and how they looked at the trials.

– BODYGUARD: The most expensive yearling in action this weekend, being a $1.6 million buy at Magic Millions, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained son of I Am Invincible – who is out of a daughter of Golden Slipper winner Mossfun – slugged it out with fellow seven-figure yearling Espionage in a trial at Randwick on September 18, narrowly going under in 49.59secs.

– CAPITOL HILL: Has got to the first juvenile features of the season despite being a son of Victoria Derby winner Prized Icon – who did finish third in this race, it should be said – although his dam Yankee Eyes is a half-sister to classy Victorian colt Scheelite. On face value, expectations this weekend wouldn't been too great from connections based off the seventh-length fourth of five at the Randwick trials on September 22, but he didn't wear blinkers in that workout and they go on for raceday.

– COUNTEROFFENSIVE: Another who finished fourth in his trial, this Deep Field colt's coming in the September 18 trial won by Espionage. He dawdled out of the barriers. but warmed up nicely in the straight to be beaten just over 2-1/4 lengths. A 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy for $425,000, he is out of the General Nediym mare Victory Cry, who is a sister to former star Adelaide juvenile Victory Chant, who showed enough precocity to be sent out favourite in a Blue Diamond.

– COUNTERPART: Like the two above him, finished fourth in his trial, beaten three lengths by Volatile, but his performance was much better than it appears on paper. Didn't have much room the straight but still went to the line powerful under a much lighter ride than most of his rivals. Trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou know how to get a two-year-old ready for these early season races. By Trapeze Artist, he is out of the Exceed And Excel mare Image, who is member of a strong Darley family, and cost $180,000 on the Gold Coast in January.

– ESPIONAGE: Like Bodyguard, the son of Zoustar is a James Harron Bloodstock colt who cost seven figures at Magic Millions – selling for $1 million at the Gold Coast – and did battle it out with that colt at the trials. Out of In Times Of War, a daughter of Streeet Cry and Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Military Rose.

– FEARLESS: Another one for James Harron who hails from the family of Starspangledbanner. His dam Matildare is a half-sister to Gold Anthem, who is the dam of the globetrotting superstar. An Inglis Classic buy for $220,000, the stablemate to Bodyguard was a narrow-but-impressive winner over Prost in 49.69secs at the September 18 trial set.

– FORCE RED: Peter and Paul Snowden-trained son of freshman sire in Cosmic Force from the Fastnet Rock mare Joseph's Coat who was a $240,000 buy for Triple Crown on the Gold Coast. Finished third in his trial, but that was the one won so impressively by Scampi, who looks to have his measure.

– HIGHNESS: The fourth of James Harron's runners, this one trained by Michael Freedman, who produced him to run 49.29secs when defeating Gravitas by just over a length on September 18. Out of a half-sister to Horse of the Year winner Dissident, the Snitzel colt cost $900,000 on the Gold Coast in January.

– MARAIS: Second of Ryan and Alexiou's runners, this chestnut is by a Breeders' Plate winner in Capitalist from a Duporth mare, Gone To Paris. Another who comes through the Scampi trial, although the $220,000 Inglis Classic buy was best of the rest, finishing second beaten just over 2-1/2 lengths.

– PROST: A $650,000 buy for Kia Ora and the Waterhouse/Bott combination, this guy is closely-related to Blue Diamond winner Samaready, which therefore makes him part of Shinzo's family. Like Samaready, the dam of Shinzo, Prost's dam Samarmeteors is out of the Secret Savings mare Samar. Finished second in his September 18 trial, albeit narrowly beaten by Fearless in a time of 49.69secs.

– SCAMPI: A son of boom Darley first-season sire Blue Point, this colt is a close relation to Black Caviar being out of Sistonic, who is the dam of Semillion. Sistonic is out of Danavia, who like Black Caviar's dam Helsinge is a daughter of Scandinavia. The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained colt, who cost $750,000, could not have been more impressive leading all the way to win in his September 18 trial by more than 2-1/2 lengths in 49.36secs.

– STRAIGHT CHARGE: Ran almost half-a-second fastest than any other trial winner on September 18, covering his 850m trial in 48.46secs when defeating Roselyn's Star by a length, albeit under a strong ride. A son of Written By who cost $270,000 on the Gold Coast in January, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott galloper is out of the I Am Invincible mare Matryoshka, who is a half-sister to Winning Rupert.

– TOO SOON: A homebred son of Charge Forward who was beaten 2-3/4 lengths by Highness but looks advantaged by the extra distance after really hitting his straps in the final 150m of his September 18 trial.

– VOLATILE: No horse looked as good coming from the back at the September 18 trials as this son of Snitzel, who powered home from last to win by almost 2-1/2 lengths in 49.32secs. Doesn't hurt that James McDonald is riding on Saturday. A $550,000 buy for China Horse Club on the Gold Coast, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained youngster is out of a half-sister to Prove It, the dam of Golden Slipper winner Forensics.
