MACAU: Aussie Import Wins Macau Guineas

Australian import Master Of Puppets gave comeback trainer K C Wong his biggest win to date with a brave front running display to destroy his opposition in the G1 Macau Guineas at Taipa on Saturday.

Ridden by Charles Perkins, Master Of Puppets was considered by most as the logical pacemaker over the 1500m course but had to battle hard to maintain the lead with six horses vying for the lead as the field swung into the back.

Perkins eventually assumed control of the race and then extended his lead around the home bend to race away for a dominant win in very heavy conditions.

The race was the first leg of the Macau Triple Crown and gave the young French apprentice his first G1 victory in his short riding career.

“I had to work very hard for the lead from the start.” Perkins said

“Even the stablemate wanted to take me on.

“It’s my biggest win and only my fourth Group race ride. I am very happy.”

Master of Puppets, by Mossman, had been something of a bridesmaid in his early runs in Macau with a frustrating run of five seconds before breaking through in dazzling fashion with a six lengths victory in the Fat Choy Cup over 1400m on February 23.

Saturday was his first run since, but according to K C Wong it was almost not to be for the gelding with feet problems leading up to the race leaving his chances looking pretty slim.

“He had bruising in his off front leg all week and I was not confident that he could run at all.” Wong said.

“Thanks to some good work from master farrier Todd Gibbons he improved, but it was not until I trotted him up on Saturday morning that I thought he was back to normal.”

Wong purchased Master Of Puppets for owner Yip Yuk Kit on the advice of long-time friend and former Macau trainer Gordon Benson.

“He won at Eagle Farm over 1200 metres and raced well up to 2000 metres in Australia and looked a very honest horse on all types of tracks.” Wong said.
