MACAU: International Honour For Martin Cangas

Talented young rider Martin Cangas is to represent Macau in the 2013 International Jockeys Championships hosted by the Selangor Jockey Club at Sungei Besi on June 15 and 16.

Filipino born Cangas is a product of the Macau Jockey Club Apprentice School, arriving from Manila in 2008.

Cangas commenced riding in November 2009 under former three time Macau champion jockey Geoff Allendorf.

Twice runner up for the champion apprentice title in 2011 and 2012, Cangas under Allendorf’s guidance has blossomed into a fine rider and at the present sits in fourth spot on the jockey’s standings with 25 winners this season.

“I am so proud to be chosen by the Club to be their representative.”

“It’s a great honor for me especially since this is my first season out of my apprenticeship.” Cangas said.

Cangas has a Group 3 victory to his credit on Golden Star in the Sand Premier Cup, and a win in the prestigious the Macau Golden Group Fat Choy Bowl on Bennetts Green.

Cangas and Allendorf combined to win the last of the day on Sunday the Class 3 over 1500 metres with King Creole in a race where the outcome was decided in the steward’s room by protest.

In a rails hugging ride Cangas bought the son of Elvstroem from near last to go down narrowly on the line to Labore ridden by fellow countryman Kelvin Abobo.

Cangas fired in an objection and the Stewards Panel headed by former South Australian chief steward Graham Loch concluded that,” inside the 100 metres Labore had shifted in entering the rightful running of King Creole for several strides, thereby impeding King Creole which momentarily lost momentum.”

The real clincher was the beaten margin with King Creole digging in after the incident to charge to the line and go down by only a short head.

Placings were reversed to give King Creole win number four in Macau.
