MACAU: One Eyed Wonder Wins Again

One eyed sand specialist Sino Brilhante treated his opponents with contempt winning Friday night’s Listed Lisboa Sand Prelude, making it win number nine from 12 race starts.

Ridden by Stanley Chin the three year old was fired out of the gates and quickly took command of the race before powering away in the straight for the easiest of wins over his stable-mate The Star Of Geely (Louis Corrales), with Sunshine Region (Frankie Choi) in third.

Trainer Gary Moore will now set his sights on the Lisboa Sand Challenge (LR) over 1350 metres on July 19 for the son of Good Journey who does appear to have the race at his mercy, meeting his rivals under the same handicap conditions.

Sino Brilhante was purchased by Gary Moore’s son James out of the 2011 Adelaide Magic Millions Sale and according to Moore was always going to be something special.

“James picked him out of the Adelaide Sale and I liked him instantly.” Moore said.

“He was well balanced, a lovely type and as soon as I seen him moving along on the DVD’s they sent from the farm I knew he was something special.”

Unfortunately Sino Brilhante suffered an injury in the paddock that resulted in the loss of his right eye which is going to limit his future prospects as an international contender.

“It’s a pity that he lost that eye as there is not many places in the world that accept one eyed horses now.” Moore added.

However being handicapped with only one eye does not create any real problems raceday according to regular rider Stanley Chin.

“He used to be a bit slow to jump early on but nowadays is a pretty straightforward horse on raceday."

Chin who has ridden successfully in most racing jurisdictions around the world was high in his praise for the three year old after the win.”

“He is one the best I have ridden in Macau and I still think the best is yet to come.” Chin said.

It was the second running of the Lisboa Sand Prelude and the win gave Gary Moore two from two in the event with Moore’s charge Red Of China also ridden by Stanley Chin winning the inaugural running of the race last year.

Double For Cangas

FRESH back from weekend in Malaysia representing Macau in the International Jockeys Challenge at Selangor, talented young rider Martin Cangas kicked home winning double on Friday night’s sand card.

Cangas was successful on the Patrick Lee trained Dynasty Treasure who belied his poor sand record to find plenty and stave off favorite Pride Of Triomphe (Andrew Calder) for a strong win in the Class 3 &4 over 1050 metres.

Public Benefit from the Alan Tam stable rang up a double for Cangas when he raced away with the last of the night the other division of the Class 3 & 4 over 1050 metres.

It’s been a great first season as a senior rider for Filipino born Cangas and Friday’s double gave him 27 winners as he currently sits in fourth spot on the jockeys’ standings.

The win by Public Benefit also made it a double on the night for the Alan Tam yard.

Tam combined with apprentice Charles Perkins to win the first of the night with Chubby Cousin in the Class 5 & 6 over 1050 metres.

The victory gave French born Perkins win number 51 in Macau which is a great achievement considering he only commenced race riding in the enclave in January 2012 some 18 months ago.

During that time Perkins has spent at least six months sidelined with injuries from two race falls and his record is even more amazing when you look at his overall stats of 290 race rides for 51 winners and 123 placed efforts, giving him a win strike of 18% and a place strike of 42%.

Included in that is three Group winners from only five Group race rides.

Hard working young jockey Breinell Yamzon made the most of a pick-up ride on Irish Pearl to win the Class 2 & 3 over 1600 metres.

Yamzon gained the mount at the expense of Mark Lei who sustained a fracture to his foot in barrier trial on Tuesday morning and justified trainer K C Wong’s faith in him with a nicely judged ride to get the heavily backed runner home over Luen Yat Colorado (Ruben Silvera), with Easy Choice (Louis Corrales) making ground late for third.

One of the busiest jockeys’ at the track of a morning Breinell Yamzon does not often get the opportunities he deserves, but makes the most of those he does get and it’s hard to find to find fault in any of his rides.

Irish Pearl is a much traveled galloper who commenced his career in New Zealand under the care of Stephen Autridge as Ishka Baha winning three races in the North Island before being exported to Hong Kong.

The gelding obviously succumbed to some problems in Hong Kong being well beaten in four runs there but has been rejuvenated by trainer K C Wong since arriving in Macau and Fridays victory was win number two in the enclave.
