MACAU: Wonder Mossman Lives Up To His Name

Star performer Wonder Mossman added his second Group victory to his impressive record when he won the 22nd running of the G2 Directors Cup at Taipa on Sunday.

Ridden by Panamanian jockey Luis Jurado Wonder Mossman powered home under hands and heels riding after Jurado’s whip broke, beating the tearaway leader Absolutely Win (Fausto Durso), with Lucky Jai (Martin Cangas) running on well from the back for third.

Trained by K C (Kin) Chong, Wonder Mossman has been a class act since the day he arrived in Macau. He has proved himself adept on both turf and sand with a G2 victory in the Sand Specialist Stakes on June 6.

K C Chong has done a wonderful job with the son of Mossman, spacing his runs to win four races and placing another two times from only eight runs in the enclave.

The gelding’s only two runs below par were on bottomless tracks and even so still managed a third in the Derby behind Lucky And Wealthy on a very heavy track.

The four year has now emerged as the hot favorite for the Macau Gold Cup to be run over 1800 metres on July 27.

For Luis Jurado it was his second Group win in Macau and the talented rider was lavish in his praise for Wonder Mossman after the win.

“He is a really top class horse this one.” Jurado said.

“We had a great run in the race, he broke well from the gates and I was just where I wanted to be in the run.

“I could see the leader Absolutely Win was still going strong before the turn so I made my move to go after him.

“I only hit my horse twice and my whip broke so I dropped it and slapped him once or twice with my hand and then pushed him out to the wire, he really finished the race strong.”

Wonder Mossman was formerly raced in Australia by Gerry Harvey under the name of Racing Eight, where he won a Warwick Farm maiden and placed a further four times from only six starts when prepared by David Payne.

* LOUIS Corrales took riding honours on Sunday with a brilliant trreble to take him to 33 winners this season and third spot on the riders standings.

Corrales is six winners away from premiership leader Fausto Durso who is on 39 victories, and with confirmation last week that Manoel Nunes has elected to remain in Singapore, Corrales emerges as the only real threat to Durso for the Jockeys’ Title.

Dragon Flying from the Stephen Chow yard was the first of Corrales winners when he appreciated getting back to a good surface with a runaway win in the first of the day in the Class 5 & 5 over 1100 metres.

Sunshine Stylish from the combined stable of Y Y Choy and Y T Lam was the second of the Panamanian rider’s victories when he arrived at the big odds of 22/1 to score easily in the Class 5 over 1500 metres.

Peter Leyshan’s old timer Danpaoshaq rounded out the day for Louis Corrales when punched forward from his wide gate to sit off the leader Fortune Smiles, before darting away at the top of the straight to pinch a winning break while the back markers were held up in traffic to win the Class 3 & 4 over 1800 metres.

Corrales is closing in on the 600 win mark in Macau with 588 victories to his name after Sunday.

He is the third most successful rider in the enclave behind Manoel Nunes on 827 and Fausto Durso on 603 winners.

Smartest win of the day was the Geoff Allendorf trained Wonderful Four who bolted away with the Class 4 & 5 over 1200 metres.

Ridden by Andrew Calder, Wonderful Four was always traveling on the bridle up front before bounding away at the two hundred and looks a class horse in the making.

“He’s a lovely improving horse.” Allendorf said.

“He over raced at his first run and we have spent a lot of time teaching him to relax and settle.

“He still gets a bit worked up before a race and behind the gates but he has the makings of a real smart horse.”

The win gave Allendorf 33 victories for the season as he sits in second spot with Gary Moore well clear on 53 wins.
