MACAU: Gold Cup Caps Super Season For Allendorf

It’s been a great season for Australian trainer Geoff Allendorf highlighted by his Derby victory in April and made even sweeter last Saturday when stable star Lucky And Wealthy won Macau’s most prestigious race, the G1 Macau Gold over 1800 metres.

Brazilian superstar jockey Joao Moreira was flown in especially for the mount and delivered a perfect ride to give Lucky And Wealthy the final two legs of the Triple Crown.

The Australian-bred son of Strada was beaten into second place in the first leg of the Triple Crown the Macau Guineas before his all the way win in the Derby, with the owner picking up an additional $100,000 bonus on Saturday for winning the last two legs of the Series.

In a race run at good speed on a very heavy track, Lucky And Wealthy was put into the perfect trailing position by Moreira after a spot of interference out of the straight the first time.

The four year travelled sweetly in the run before being popped off the back of the leader Master Of Puppets coming to the corner, and was never in doubt after to record a three length victory over Dr Sweet (Peter Ho), with Luen Yat Blackberry (Charles Perkins ) running on late for third.

“What a wonderful horse he is. He just keeps getting the job done.” Allendorf said.

“This was his toughest test to date, equal weights against older horses but he just keeps rising to the occasion.”

“You would not believe it I offered the ride to a number of the top jockeys here, and we were struggling to find a decent jockey, that’s why we called Moreira.

“I told Joao the horse would be forward and said just have him where he is traveling well as I knew they would run along.”

Lucky And Wealthy was a mere $A14,000 purchase at the 2010 Queensland Horses in Training Sale and has now won 10 races from his 23 runs and close to $HK4 million for owner Cheung Pik Fong.

Allendorf and Moreira backed up quickly to take out the second of the days feature races the Association Of Macau Racing Journalists Cup over 1200 metres, with the tradesman like galloper Theology.

A rising eight year old Theology is one of the most honest horses in the enclave, but so often things not always go his way with his pattern of racing as a back marker.

Joao Moreira made sure everything fell into place with another perfect ride to bring the gelding home late via the rail for good win over Happy Strength (Frankie Leong), with Easy Money (Horace Lam) third.

Geoff Allendorf was lavish with his praise for Moreira after the win stating, “That was a deserved win, he’s so honest but has been unlucky so many times but Joao just rode him a treat.”

“I thought 1200 metres was a bit short and the racing pattern of the day was against him, but I told Joao still to let him get back and ride for luck.”

“He (Moreira) is a true professional, and a real gentleman to go with, it’s just a pleasure to put him on.”

Geoff Allendorf is currently on 36 winners for the season 22 off Gary Moore who has wrapped his seventh Macau Title.

Whilst it’s not been his biggest tally winner wise for a season, it’s been one of the most satisfying for Allendorf with two Group 1 victories for Lucky And Wealthy and his share of Cup races throughout the year.

“I think the stable has won more then 20 Cup races overall since we started training and that keeps my owners happy.”

“I’ve got great staff, we all work hard in my place and it’s been a real team effort.”

* K C WONG enjoyed his best weekend since he returned to the training ranks this season with a treble over the two nights and coming within a short head of four winners.

Wong won the first of the evening on Friday night the 0 to 50 Special Conditions with Hugo And You under Charles Perkins before being beaten a whisker in the second with Oriental Pearl who was caught in the last stride in race two the Class 4 & 5.

The promising Fierce Wind Horse (Breinell Yamzon) made it three wins from six starts with a good win in the Class 3 & 4 over 1100 metres on the turf Saturday, with stable new comer Riches Treasure powering

home from well back under Louis Corrales to make it three for the weekend in winning the Class 3 & 4 over 1400 metres.

K C (Paul Wong) has done a fine job with his small team since he commenced operations again last August and after the weekend has 15 winners and 16 second placed efforts from only 86 runners.

Wong has the best strike rate of any trainer in the enclave with 17% win rate and a 42% place rate, ahead of Gary Moore who has a 15% win strike and a 32% place strike.

It’s a remarkable effort when you consider that Wong up until a few weeks ago was operating all season with a string of 10 horses or less.

One of the top trainers in the enclave in the late nineties and early part of the last decade Wong called it quits in 2006 for personal reasons but never lost his interest in racing.

Master Of Puppets gave Paul Wong his biggest win to date when he destroyed his rivals with a six lengths win in the Group 1 Macau Guineas in March.

Trust My Bet In Upset Win

In what will go down as the upset victory of the season Trust My Bet under a lovely ride from Peter Ho hit the line too well for the odds on favorite and stable mate The Star Of Geely (Stanley Chin) in Friday night’s final of the Lisboa Sand Challenge over 1350 metres.

Trained by Gary Moore, Trust My Bet made light of the fact that he was well out of it at the handicaps and had not won on the all-weather surface in a win that left most on course shocked.

First up since May, the son of Mugharreb (USA) under normal handicapping should have been getting 37 pounds off the more fancied stable-mate The Star Of Geely, but with the weight structure of the Lisboa Series only received 13 pounds.

No one told the three year old gelding he was at a disadvantage and that prior to Friday had looked to be more effective from 1500 to 1950 metres on the turf.

A bit of time is a wonderful thing and the gelding has come back better and stronger and will have no trouble adding a few more wins for connections in the new season.

For jockey Peter Ho it was the start of a great weekend with the talented rider winning another two races on Saturday’s card to give him a treble.

Ho who is not long back from injury was successful on Golden Bingo for Gary Moore in the Class 5 & 6 over 1950 metres, and took out the last on Saturday with the very promising General’s Steed for Vincent Chong in the Class 3 over 1800 metres.
