The Honourable Bernard Charnwut Chan joins the Board of Stewards of The Hong Kong Jockey Club

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (“Club”) announced today (10 June) that The Honourable Bernard Charnwut Chan, GBM, GBS, JP has been co-opted to join the Board of Stewards.

He will fill a vacancy left by Mrs Margaret Leung SBS JP, who retires at the age of 70 on the same date after serving as a Steward of the Club since September 2014. In appreciation of her outstanding service and contribution to the Club, the Board has invited Mrs Leung to become an Honorary Steward.

The Honourable Bernard Charnwut Chan has been a Member of the Club since 1989 and a Voting Member since 2015. Mr Chan has a long record of public service, including as Chairperson of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, Chairman of both the Hong Kong Palace Museum Ltd and M Plus Museum Ltd, and Chairman of Tai Kwun Culture and Arts Co. Ltd. He is Chairman and President of Asia Financial Holdings and Chairman of Asia Insurance. He is also Chairman of the Hong Kong – Thailand Business Council and an advisor to Bangkok Bank (China) Co. Ltd. He is a Hong Kong deputy to the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China and Convenor of the Non-Official Members of the Executive Council. His personal profile is attached.

Paying tribute to Mrs Leung, Club Chairman Mr Philip N L Chen said, "On behalf of the Board of Stewards, I would like to thank Margaret for her dedicated service over the years. A keen horse racing enthusiast, her extensive experience in the banking industry and public service has been of great benefit to the Club. As Chairperson of HKJC Racing Club Limited and through her role on the Club's committees, including the Racing, Membership and Audit committees, she has made a huge contribution over the years. I would also like to welcome Bernard, who brings to the Board of Stewards a distinguished record of public and community service, as well as strong and extensive business experience."
