Lachesis Wins QE II Cup At Kyoto

After finishing second in the 2013 edition Lachesis overwhelmed a top class field of fillies and mares for a deserved victory in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Kyoto on Sunday.

The daughter of champion sire Deep Impact filly was coming off an impressive runner-up effort against male opponents in the All Comers for her first Grade-race win and G1 victory.

She gave trainer Katsuhiko Sumii his 20th JRA G1 victory and jockey Yuga Kawada his fifth JRA G1 title but it was the first Queen Elizabeth II Cup title for both.

A fraction slow out of the gate Lachesis found a good spot along the rails in mid-division behind a brisk pace.

Lachesis was held back briefly as the field picked up speed turning for home but as soon as an opening presented itself she surged through in pursuit of Oaks winner Nuovo Record who had taken command soon after entering the stretch.

She closed with every stride to get by a neck.

“Her start wasn’t great but we were able to position ourselves in an ideal spot behind Nuovo Record. We were squeezed in a bit at the straight but she had plenty of run and really

stretched well to the finish,” commented Yuga Kawada.

Sumii also trained the third placed Dia De La Madre, who sat three wide and came with a powerful charge.
