Deep Impact Filly Wins Hanshin Juvenile

Shonan Adela, The only Deep Impact filly in the field, recorded her third consecutive win to claim the champion two-year-old filly title in the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies on December 14.

Second against her male counterparts in her debut in August at Niigata, the bay filly broke her maiden in her following start at Tokyo and came into the Juvenile Fillies with another win in an allowance race, the Karamatsu Sho, three weeks back.

It was the fifth JRA G1 title for her trainer Yoshitaka Ninomiya and his first since Rainbow Dahlia won the 2012 Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup.

Jockey Masayoshi Ebina had won the 2009 edition of the Juvenile Fillies with Apapane and the pair subsequently claimed the Fillies Triple Crown in the following season.

He has ridden Shonan Adela in all her four career starts with this win marking his 22nd JRA G1 victory.

Shonan Adela launched an impressive charge to pin Let's Go Donki in the final strides for a half length victory.

“She didn't break well, but I decided to keep cool and take this opportunity to race her from a little further back than usual,” Ebina said.

“Just as I had anticipated she had great late speed and although she was a bit green we were able to come out for a clear run. I knew that she could make it once we hit the gas.”

Roca, who was sent off race favorite coming off her win race debut on November 2, was slow out of the gate and had to race behind the 18-horse field. “

She lost too much ground, turning wide entering the stretch, and never managed to cause any threat, finishing eighth.

Shonan Adela is the 17th G1 winner and 54th overall stakes winner by Deep Impact.
