Danon Platina Flies In Futurity

The favourite Danon Platina ran up to expectations when he captured the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes for two-year-olds at Nakayama on Sunday to earn top rating among his generation.

His three previous starts resulted a runner-up finish in his debut followed by a convincing four lengths win in a maiden race in October and another strong three-length victory in the Begonia Sho, an allowance race seven weeks later.

The win marked trainer Sakae Kunieda’s 11th JRA G1 victory, while jockey Masayoshi Ebina celebrated his 23rd JRA G1 title, just a week after claiming the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies with Shonan Adela.

Danon Platina and Shonan Adela are both by champion sire Deep Impact, who is now rivaling Sunday Silence as the greatest stalion to have stod in Japan.

This year Deep Impact’s offspring have won 10 of the 23 JRA G1 races.

"He definitely takes after his sire Deep Impact - his finishing speed speaks for itself," said Ebina of Danon Platina.

“The going wasn’t very good and since we broke from an inner stall, I tried hard to position him away from the rails which went well as planned.”

Victory in Japan's only G1 race for two-year-old colts was worth about $A1.4 million to the winner.

Danon Platina had three-quarters of a length to spare at the finish over Arma Waioli with Clarity Sky the same distance back in third.

After breaking sharply from an inner stall Ebina kept Danon Platina near the rear and three wide.

On the home turn Ebina allowed the grey to hit his best stride and the colt willingly demonstrated a resounding finish to surge to the lead at the furlong pole and hold off the fast closing Arma Waioli.

Ryan Moore missed a perfect ending to his superb year when his mount Peptide Warheasd finished last of the 18 runners.

Moore has recorded G1 triumphs in Australia, Dubai, Ireland, Britain, France, Canada and the US in 2014 and has been in great form in Japan recently winning four races in one day at Chukyo and a treble at another meeting at that track.

Moore returns to the UK this week.
