Duramente Wins Satuski Sho For Demuro

Regally bred Duramente completed a quick classic double for his sire King Kamehameha when he won the G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) at Nakayama on Sunday.

Ridden by Italian jockey Mirco Demuro, the Noriyuki Hori-trained Duramente unleashed a scintillating rally and swept past Real Steel for a 1 1/2-length triumph, reversing the result from his previous start when beaten by the runner-up.

Both the winner and runner-up are owned by Sunday Racing and were bred by Northern Farm where King Kamehamaha stands. The stallion's daughter Let's Go Donki won the G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) on April 12.

Duramente recorded his third win in five career starts but not without a moment of high anxiety for Demuro when he had to angle to the outside on the final turn for a clear run. The colt overreacted and swerved out, interfering with several opponents.

The action cost Demuro a suspension until May 3.

"He was easy to ride early in the race but he's very highly strung,”Demuro said.

“It was his first time going right-handed and the crowd was very loud too, so he may have overreacted at the fourth corner.

“He gave me a bit of a fright. We'll have to work on that towards the Derby but he certainly is a very strong colt."

Real Steel had defeated Duramente in the G3 Kyodo News Service Hia in Tokyo but was no match on Sunday.

Kitasan Black was third in the 15-horse field with the favourite Satono Clown sixth.

The Satsuki Sho is the first jewel in Japan's Triple Crown, which continues with the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) on May 31 at Tokyo and the Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger) at Kyoto in October.
