20916 Yasuda Kinen - Logotype Upsets Hot Favourite Maurice

Logotype, the eighth pick in the betting, produced a gate-to-wire victory in the Yasuda Kinen in Tokyo on Sunday, bringing to an end the winning streak of hot favourite Maurice.

Logotype, champion 2YO in 2012 when he won the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes, had been winless in 16 starts since he landed the G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) as a 3YO in in 2013.

He gave trainer Tsuyoshi Tanaka his fifth JRA G1 victory which includes two G1 jump titles while his jockey Hironobu Tanabe celebrated only his second G1 victory and first since 2014.

After breaking smoothly Tanabe hustled Logotype to the front and led the field uncontested at a slow pace while Maurice, Real Steal, Decipher and Contentment followed.

As the others made headway at the last corner the six-year-old son of Lohengrin maintained the most economic route on the rails and steadily stretched away to a 1-1/4 length victory.

Maurice, undefeated in his previous seven starts including the four at G1 level in Japan and Hong Kong, was ridden by Australian jockey Tommy Berry.

He was keen at the heels of the leader early and entered the lane in second place but was unable to extend and threaten the winner.

He held on for second from the fast-closing Fiero.

Logotype’s trainer Tsuyoshi Tanaka was relieved to see his hose back in winning form.

“We had to wait for a long time to justify Logotype’s true form as a G1 winner and I am grateful that he has stayed healthy to this day to make it happen,” he said.

“I discussed our tactics with Hironobu Tanabe and we both shared the same opinion on giving our best shot in front if the chance was to arise.

“The race developed to our advantage – I was kicking the table with excitement.

“He was showing good form in his last start although he was beaten by a horse carrying five

kilos less.

“I decided to concentrate on maintaining his fitness and motivation through regular and fast gallops in preparation to the Yasuda Kinen.

“I had every confidence in Logotype’s strength, he just couldn’t manage a win and both I and the stable staff are so delighted that he has finally made it.

“I have not yet decided on our next move as this victory against such a strong field exceeded our

expectations.”

Hironobu Tanabe said Logotype had shown his class and was unfazed by the big crowd.

“He took everything in his stride, and he is easy to position both up front and behind horses.

I could have gone to the front in the last two starts as well if I wanted to and it just happened that when I made a move to make the pace this time, nobody was willing to contest the lead.

“I didn’t deliberately drop the pace and could have gone faster but Logotype settled so I left it at that.

“I thought that if I could get the others to hold back it would work to our advantage. I also observed that the inside track wasn’t as bad as many people were saying so I had no hesitation about choosing the inside route.

“He still had a lot left after the uphill - that’s when I felt that we could hold off Maurice for the win.”

Hong Kong raider Contentment, second to Maurice at Sha Tin at his previous start, raced close but came up empty and faded to last.

His rider Brett Preble said “He broke well and we were able to sit in a good position. He traveled smoothly but seemed to be bothered by the rough surface and had nothing left in the stretch.”
