French jockey Christophe Lemaire continued his great run in Japan when landed his third G1 win in three weeks aboard Rey De Oro.

Lemaire recently won the Shuka Sho (1000 Guineas) with Almond Eye and the Japanese St Leger, the Kikuka Sho, on Fierement. He has won four of the six classics in Japan this year and 20 JRA G1 races in total.

The Kazuo Fujisawa-trained Rey De Oro showed a strong turn of foot to weave through the field and beat long-time leader Sungrazer, ridden by Joao Moreira, by a length and a quarter

"I knew I had a good chance," Lemaire said. "The colt's condition and the race development was perfect. The pace was just right and he was relaxed so everything went smoothly."

Rey De Oro will continue racing this year and again in 2019.

Fujisawa said: "He will run in one more race in this year. I'll announce it after we have determined which race it will be."

Rey De Oro won all three of his two-year-old starts including the G2 Hopeful Stakes and last year was fifth in the Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) before winning the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby).

He also landed the G2 Kobe Shimbun Hai and was second in the G1 Japan Cup.

This year, following a third in the G2 Kyoto Kinen, he went overseas for the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic before returning to claim the G2 All Comers in September.

Trainer Kazuo Fujisawa was celebrating his 27th JRA G1 win that includes six victories in the Tenno Sho Autumn with Bubble Gum Fellow (1996), Symboli Kris S (2002 and 2003), Zenno Rob Roy (2004), Spielberg (2014) and Rey De Oro.

Favourite Suave Richard finished a disappointing tenth of 12 runners.

His trainer Yasushi Shono said: "He was very tense today. He didn't get a good start and after that his fighting spirit went away.

“I would like to train him for the Japan Cup as he can do better.”
