Walker backs his Judgement with straight five bid

One week after bringing up four wins in a row, Sacred Judgement is getting no time to rest on his laurels as he returns for another bite at the cherry in this Saturday’s $70,000 Class 3 race over 1400m.

The quick back-up has caught a few by surprise as the So You Think six-year-old had to tough it out in the Class 4 1400m last week to bring up a fourth consecutive win in the space of two months.

Given he figures among the recently released list of 34 nominations in the Group 1 Singapore Gold Cup (2000m) on November 14, and is currently 20th in the order of entry off his rating of 72, some might deduce trainer Mark Walker is hard-pressed for more points in a bid to get into the final 16.

The Kiwi horseman said it was more a case of "winning form is good form" than a race against time to make the cut.

"Got to ride the wave. He's pulled up good and is bright as a button, and that race suits him," he said.

"There was a Class 3 over 1200m on Polytrack next Saturday, but he doesn't like the Poly. There was also a Class 3 race over 1800m that day, but I didn't want him to run over that trip yet.

"Yes, I've entered him in the Gold Cup, as I don't see why he won't get 2000m. He's got a bit stronger now.

"But the early nominations are free, so even if I think he can run the trip, I just put his name up first, just like I've also entered horses like Time Lord and Axel. I'm definitely not trying to boost his ratings to get into the Gold Cup.

"Even this race on Saturday is a big step-up for him. He only beat Royalty by three-quarter length last week, Royalty is a horse who hasn't won in 12 starts, so I'm not getting too ahead of myself with him."

Walker is not changing the last winning partnership with his now three-kilo claiming apprentice Jerlyn Seow Poh Hui (Sacred Judgement was her 10th winner) staying on while he has booked senior jockeys Marc Lerner and Shafiq Rizuan respectively on his two other runners, Time Lord and Augustano. Walker's leading apprentice jockey Hakim Kamaruddin is only back from his two-day careless riding suspension next week.

The last win (of five) from Time Lord came in Class 3 company in February, with the Guillotine seven-year-old having since struggled when tested against stronger opposition.

He is also backing up as he ran last week as well, finishing last to Nepean in the Kranji Stakes A race over 1400m - not quite the formline to take to a Singapore Gold Cup even at the minimum weight of 50kgs. Walker is not holding his breath, but expects some improvement in Saturday's easier company.

"It's taken a while for Time Lord to overcome his suspensory issues. He's back in Class 3 and he may be more competitive," said Walker.

Form has also deserted Augustano. The King Power Stable-owned Hard Spun seven-year-old ended his career under Lee Freedman on a winning note for his ninth career victory back in January, but has since battled to open his account for Walker in eight starts.

Saturday's ninth attempt is likely to end the same way on paper, but Walker said a spot of rain could enhance his chances a fraction.

"Augustano  needs a wet track for things to go his way. Hopefully, we get a bit of rain," he said.

With another big team (17 runners including four emergencies) looming this week, Walker is facing another busy day where he will try to consolidate his current seven-win lead on reigning Singapore champion trainer Michael Clements while waiting for next Saturday's Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (1800m), interestingly a feature race still missing from his glowing resume.

The three-time Singapore champion trainer will, however, toss in only one runner, Sacred Croix, against the might of dominant Raffles Cup winner Lim's Lightning and Clements' five-strong armada of Top Knight, Big Hearted, Ocean Crossing, So Hi Class and Prosperous Return as well as Stephen Gray's Singapore Derby winner Hard Too Think.

Savvy Command  is also among the QEII Cup nominations, but Walker has elected for a softer option for the Savabeel five-year-old on his pathway towards his main mission, the Singapore Gold Cup.

"Savvy Command won't run in the QEII Cup. He will run in the Class 3 race (1800m) on the same day instead," he said.

"I'll be left with only Sacred Croix. He was unlucky in the Raffles Cup, he was held up a couple of times.

"He could never have beaten the winner, but he could have finished in the money."
