SOUTH AFRICA: Magnolia Handicap, A Sprint For The Ladies

The supporting race on the card at Turffontein on Saturday is the Grade 3 Magnolia Handicap for Fillies and Mares over 1160m. While not in the same league as Igugu, who makes her seasonal debut in the main race, some decent fillies will be facing the starter.

Top weight, Carey's Qui, under Pierre Strydom has very consistent form, but has been running over 1200 to 1400m of late. The distance and the top weight are likely to tell on the day, but the four year-old is very capable of finishing in the placings.

The Herman Brown/Frank Robinson trained Chocolicious, won the Grade 1 Allan Robertson Championship(1200m) at Scottsville back in May 2010 before heading for a Dubai campaign.

Unfortunately the filly injured herself, and it was decided to bring her back to South Africa. This is her third run after a rest and if she is back at her best she should be fighting out the finish.

Contesting the finish with Chocolicious should be the Louis Goosen trained Waywest Goddess. The speedy filly won the Grade 2 Fillies Nursery(1160m) at Turffontein before finishing half a length off Chocolicious in the Allan Robertson and will be out to turn the tables here.

Flowers of Spring has filled either the first or second box in her last five starts. The Ivan Moore trained daughter of Qui Danzig won the Listed Banyana Handicap(1000m) on the Vaal sand, but she is stepping up in class here, and at best could be fighting out the minor places.

The dark horse in the race is the lightly weighted three-year-old Jackodore, ridden by Robbie Fradd. The daughter of Toreador has won two of her five starts, finishing 4th, 1.75 L behind the hugely talented Katy's Lane in the Grade 3 Starling Stakes(1400m) at Turffontein.

She is clearly an improving sort and hails from the in-form Sean Tarry stable. While unlikely to cause an upset, the filly could be one for the minor places.
