SOUTH AFRICA: Durban Out For Gimmethegreenlight

Gimmethegreenlight will return to Cape Town after his failure in the G1 SA Classic at Turffontein on Saturday, his trainer Justin Snaith ruling out all suggestions of a Durban campaign.

Snaith expressed the wish “to get him back to Cape Town as soon as possible” after the his fading seventh in the Classic.

Snaith said: “There had been rain during the week and the conditions coupled with the distance, the altitude and overcoming the draw proved too much.

"He didn't have the stamina for all that and he got tired.”

Snaith's thoughts have already switched to a trip to the US for the Breeders' Cup Mile in November and the need to give his Queen's Plate winner a good break before starting to get him ready for the build-up to Santa Anita.

“That is what we are going to do now although he will have to return to Cape Town via my yard in Port Elizabeth," Snaith said.

There have been recent outbreaks of African Horse Sickness near Randjesfontein and, while these do not affect the export protocols, they are making getting horses to Cape Town a roundabout process.

Dr Mpofu, the Randjesfontein-based state vet, explained that the area around the training centre has to be clear of AHS for 30 days for horses to be given a clearance for Cape Town.

Meanwhile Brett Crawford is pleased with TBA Paddock Stakes winner Thunder Dance.

“She had a nice beak after that win and she has done well. Her main mission is the Woolavington at Greyville on June 2 and she could have two prep runs at Scottsville on Saturday week and the KRA Fillies Guineas.”

Crawford has a team of six, including Investec Cape Derby winner Jackson, set for his first Durban campaign since he left Plattner Racing in 2009.

Last year's Gold Vase winner Grey Cossack is due to have his first race since bruising a tendon last year on Sunday when he will be racing for the Herman Brown/Frank Robinson stable.
