SOUTH AFRICA: Tellina Too Good In Gauteng Guineas

Tellina came from the clouds to win the R1 million Gauteng Guineas over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday, justifying the faith jockey Robbie Fradd had shown in him when picking him in preference to other mounts.

It was the Silvano colt’s toughest test to date, but Geoff Woodruff’s charge settled behind the frontrunners and when Fradd made the call l close to home he swooped on the leading pack to win going away from War Horse.

Killua Castle, who dumped jockey Marthinus Mienie on the way to the start and had to be ridden by MJ Odendaal instead and then was reshod, ran a cracking race in the circumstances for third.

Alexandra Palace, who was all the rage leading up to the race, was always chasing and finished ninth.

Most punters did not look beyond Espumanti in the R500,000 Gauteng Fillies Guineas, but the British-bred favourite could only plod into fourth as the Ormond Ferraris-trained Cherry On The Top swept to the front inside the final 200m and won going away by 2.25 lengths.

She was the top-rated runner in the field and was followed home by Do You Remember with King’s Temptress, the second top-rated runner in the field, back in third.

The other G2 race at the meeting was the R300,000 Hawaii Stakes over 1400m and the honours went the way of Whiteline Fever, who looked a picture and ran home strongly to hold off Approachable and favourite Galileo’s Destiny.

Daytona Stud bred Whiteline Fever, who was ridden by Raymond Danielson for trainer Sean Tarry.

The race was a triumph for stallion Right Approach, who also sired the second horse, Approachable.

Whiteline Fever was responsible for a fair effort behind his stablemate Pomodoro in the Durban July and did well here with a top class win after a 91 day lay off.

He showed that he is more than just a pretty face and Tarry says he now has an interesting season ahead of him.

Tarry, who had cautioned before the race that the 1400m was short of his charge’s best, but endorsed his jockey’s sentiment that he enjoyed running fresh, was thrilled with the win.

“Training nice horses like this for guys like Chris Van Niekerk, Markus Jooste and Marsh Shirtliff is an absolute pleasure. And I honestly mean that!” he said.

The Horse Chestnut Stakes is Whiteline Fever’s major target.

Trainer Mike de Kock might not have enjoyed much success in the main feature races, but his stable did not go home empty handed as Amur Affair won the G3 Acacia Handicap.
