Trainer Dean Kannemeyer and jockey Kevin Shea delivered an upset result with Ice Machine in the G2 Green Point Stakes at Kenilworth on Saturday.

Ice Machine came with a decisive rattle in the closing stages of the R300,000 contest to overhaul the flying grey King Of Pain while super mare Beach Beauty, an odds on favourite, ran on into third.

No Worries set the pace and was about five lengths clear by the time the field rounded the bend into the straight.

Beach Beauty and second favourite Capetown Noir were tracking one another and it was the latter that made the first move, driving up the outside of the track and reeling in No Worries in short order.

But Capetown Noir was unable to draw clear and a number of challengers were charging down the centre of the course.

For a few strides King Of Pain looked to have the edge, but Ice Machine responded to Shea’s efforts and swooped for the prize.

On a day filled with classy feature racing the most impressive performance came from Captain America in the R2 million Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes.

The Brett Crawford-trained Captain America had won three in a row prior to this and powered away in the fashion of a good horse and will be even better over more ground than this 1400m.

Both Hatt and Crawford had a day to remember. The jockey racked up four winners and the trainer three including the G2 Selangor Cup with De Kock.

Trainer Mike Bass also registered three victories. He and young Grant van Niekerk teamed up to land the first two races with the filly Splashdown and the promisingr colt Helderberg Blue.

Bass also claimed the G2 Merchants, which had been postponed from last weekend’s washed-out meeting when Hatt booted home Tevez in vintage style.
