Options Open For Triple Crown King

Plans for Triple Crown winner Louis The King are still fluid although the Daily News 2000 and the Vodacom Durban July are being considered for the champion three-year-old according to his trainer Geoff Woodruff.

The Randjesfontein-based conditioner, who celebrated three winners at Turffontein last Saturday and took home the bulk of the prize-money in both R2-million SA Derby and President’s Champions Challenge, said he was still feeling “shattered” by the momentous weekend.

“It was a hard week and an even harder weekend, with Champions Day on Saturday and the National Yearling Sale on Sunday and Monday,” he said.

Louis The King landed the SA Triple Crown when he kept rolling under Robbie Fradd to win the SA Derby to become only the second horse in history to win the three races that comprise the series, the Gauteng Guineas, SA Classic and Derby.

Woodruff said: “He pulled up very well, as sound as a bell. He was tired on Sunday morning, but not grumpy.

“He’s had three hard races in the space of two months and I don’t want to go to the well too often – he certainly needs a little rest.

“But we have to consider the Daily News 2000. It’s not an easy race to win and he’s never been to Greyville before but we will nominate him and he’ll run if it feels the right way to go.

“We’ll see how he goes in the next couple of weeks.”

As for the Durban July, there are several things Woodruff is going to take into consideration including weight, the draw and the state of the track.

Woodruff said he would be happy to run in the country’s premier race if the colt gets 56kg or less before considering the other factors.

“With the changes they’ve made to Greyville, I believe the draw will be of paramount importance because there’ll be no false rail and the track is very narrow.

“And we have to see whether Greyville has a truly good surface. I wouldn’t want to jeopardise my best horses on a poor track”

The July is definitely stablemate Yorker’s mission, even though he is likely to carry top weight.

“He’s a big, strong boy nowadays and he’ll be up to it even if he gets a big weight.”

Woodruff will run Arcetri Pink in the KRA Guineas on the opening day of Champions Season at Greyville on Saturday and his Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner looks an outstanding chance with her 2.5kg sex allowance.

This will be her tenth start of the season and the sixth stakes race she has contested this year.

“She drew badly in the KRA Fillies Guineas, which is why we elected to run her against the colts,” said Woodruff.

“She’s a good filly with a good weight and Kevin Shea will be riding her again.

“She’s taken it all in her stride and we felt we’d like to give it a go especially because over 1600m it looks like the fillies may be better than the colts.”

Not Sulking will represent the stable in the KRA Fillies Guineas but will have her work cut out from a wide draw against In The Fast Lane.

The other feature race at Greyville on Saturday is the G2 Drill Hall Stakes featuring G1 stars Beach Beauty, Capetown Noir and Master Of My Fate.

Last year’s winner Beach Beauty ran an eye-catching pipe opener in the Poinsettia while Master Of My Fate will be very interesting fresh over this trip.

The Dean Kannemeyer-trained Capetown Noir is a top miler with a blistering turn of foot but this track was against him last year when narrowly beaten in the KRA Guineas and Daily News 2000.

The KRA Guineas has 10 horses standing their ground while the KRA Fillies Guineas and Drill Hall Stakes have both attracted full fields of 12 plus three reserve runners due to the turf track being narrowed to make way for the new polytrack.

Captain America heads the KRA Guineas field and drawn seven while his Cape Derby conqueror Legislate has drawn well in four.

Legislate was well beaten by Captain America when they last met over this trip in the Cape Guineas.
