Top Horses Racing For Charity

Leading trainers Geoff Woodruff and Alec Laird have set some of their top runners for the G2 Emperors Palace Charity Mile at Turffontein on November 1.

Woodruff will be responsible for five runners including Durban July third Tellina and his Triple Crown champion Louis The King.

He also has declared Killua Castle, who ran third in this race last year, Rake’s Chestnut, who was narrowly beaten by Legislate in the G1 Daily News 2000, and Lockheed Jetstar, winner of the Listed Thukela Handicap over this distance at Greyville on Durban July day.

Louis The King, who will be ridden by Piere Strydom, and Rake’s Chestnut, the mount of Anton Marcus, are on a path to the Sansui Summer Cup.

Laird will send out a trio led by Bouclette Top, who is likely to be close to the top of betting, with As You Like and Bezanova.

Each of the 16 horses in the field will run for a charity with a total of R550,000 to be shared between them.

The charity tied to the winner will receive R100,000, with the prizes going down to R20,000 for the charities represented by the last five horses past the post.

Bob Yearham, Chief Operating Officer of Gaming for sponsor Peermont, announced that from next year R1 million will be distributed among the charities, almost doubling the amount of money available this year.
