Some Mythical Magic at Greyville on Sunday

There is a week to go to the wonders of the R5m, Grade 1 Sun Met (2000m) meeting at Kenilworth in Cape Town.

However before all that as I was writing this coloumn I decided to sit and await the debut of the much hyped two-year-old filly Miss Frankel over 1000m on Saturday on the same course only to see this particular firework fizzle out before the fuse was ever really burning brightly.

For reasons unknown racing folk all around the World love nothing more than hyping up a horse only to watch their would be hero, in this case heroine, fall on their own sword. Although I am quite sure she will win races, if she was the new Pegasus as some had implied then even inexperience should not have seen her beaten six and a half lengths in to seventh, and I am disappointed, even if I may be the only one.

Onwards and looking at Greyville on Sunday my trainer of the week award goes to Sean Tarry for number of winners but then again that is what we have all come to expect for a trainer of his magnitude. I make it six winners in the last week which is not to be sniffed at by anyone’s standards, and as if he is out to make my life that much easier, he only has the one runner on the Greyville card – what a thoughtful man.

I cannot say the form jumps out at me with regard to Mythical Magic in race eight but we all know by now I believe in riding the wave when a yard are in form. A small each way bet on the Vaal maiden winner could yet reap rich dividends off two pounds lower than her last, wide margin, defeat.

She will be a big price with double figures expected but it may also be worth a little look at Roman Emperor in the opener who looks the more likely winner of the two. Duncan Howells continues in good form unless I back them and the son of Dynasty looks to be improving slowly with an acceptable if not inspiring third last time out here over 100m shorter. He can improve again and take a hand at 1.05pm (Race One), and is the only other bet I can see worth having this Sunday afternoon.
