Upper Lambourn based Oliver Sherwood is ending his near-40 year training career and will take up the role as assistant to Harry Derham.

Sherwood is best known for his association with 2015 Grand National winner Many Clouds who also won the Hennessy Gold Cup and the Cotswold Chase on two occasions. He also enjoyed plenty of Cheltenham Festival winners including The West Awake (1987 Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle, 1988 Sun Alliance Novices' Chase), Rebel Song (1988 Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle) and Aldino (1991 Grand Annual Chase).

He enjoyed his first winner as a trainer with The Breener at Newbury in November 1984 and achieved a first big-race success a month later with the same horse in the 1984 Challow Hurdle.

Sherwood will join Harry Derham as assistant trainer in Derham's new purpose-built base near Newbury.
