Breeders’ Cup Turf rematch for Derby one-two

The Epsom Derby first and second, Auguste Rodin and King Of Steel, could meet again in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita.

Arguably, the Epsom Derby has been the only time in three clashes this season that the pair have both experienced an equal opportunity – Auguste Rodin never fired in the King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, whilst the ride on King Of Steel was heavily criticised in the aftermath of the Irish Champion Stakes. In the Derby, Auguste Rodin ran out an easy winner with the inexperienced King Of Steel staying on well in the closing furlong.

There should be strong European representation across the whole Breeders' Cup meeting, with 1000 Guineas winner Mawj set for the Breeders' Cup Mile, where she could meet Aidan O'Brien's Paddington. The colt was disappointing on desperate ground in the Group 1 QEII Stakes on Champions Day, and should bounce back on a better surface.

The sprinters appear to have an excellent chance in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, with both Nunthorpe winner Live In The Dream and Royal Ascot hero Bradsell entered. The Adam West-trained Live In The Dream has already been given a US warm-up in the Grade 2 Woodford Stakes, where connections were delighted with his fourth.

Other potential European runners include Big Evs for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and Group 1 winners Inspiral and Warm Heart for the Filly & Mare Turf.
