Day Of Upsets At Belmont

Bill Mott’s Close Hatches upstaged dual champion Beholder and her arch rival Kentucky Oaks winner Princess Of Sylmar in the G1 Ogden Phipps at Belmont on Saturday.

In a major success for the Juddmonte operation, the four-year-old sat behind the pace before getting home in a tremendous finish.

Sent off as third favourite in the $1 million event, the four-year-old landed her fourth G1 success by a head from Princess Of Sylmar, who closed from the rear and just fell short, whilke Beholder could manage only fourth in her first New York start.

"We've been pointing to this race since early spring," said Mott.

"It's one of those cases where things work out, when you make a plan and it comes to fruition.

"She's been unbelievably good. She's reproduced her form from last year and maybe even gotten a little better.

“I have had some really good fillies and I think she fits right into that category."

She was ridden by Joel Rosario and caped his great day as he also won the Belmont Stakes on Tonalist.

Other G1 results on the Belmont card included:-

MET MILE: Last year’s Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice, trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez), completed a four-timer in this prestigious $1.25 million contest on its first running after being moved from Memorial Day to become one of six G1 races on the Belmont Stakes program.

Palace Malice had won all his three previous starts this year in lesser grade. He collared Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile victor Goldencents to score by a length.

"I was very concerned when he drew the one post - that can be difficult to overcome," Pletcher said.

"What can you say about the quality of a horse that's able to do that one year after winning a classic?"

MANHATTAN STAKES; Arlington Million winner Real Solution overpowered his rivals in the $1 million Manhattan to post his second G1 on turf.

Ken and Sarah Ramsey's 5-year-old homebred, who became racing's newest millionaire with the $535,000 winner's share, was ridden by Javier Castellano for trainer Chad Brown.

Real Solution was awarded victory in the Arlington Million via disqualification after finishing second last summer, his only prior US win in seven previous starts that included a third in this race last year.

He began his career in Italy, where he was a three-time winner in five starts before transferring to the US.

Kaigun held second by one length over Seek Again.

ACORN STAKES: With dominant Kentucky Oaks winner Untapable sitting this out, Sweet Reason (Leah Gyarmati/Irad Ortiz) came from off the pace to beat a high-class field of three-year-old fillies for her second G1 win.

She unleashed a terrific turn of foot from the eighth pole to win by half a length over Sweet Whiskey.

"Everything turned out perfectly," Ortiz said after his first Acorn triumph. "I sat and I waited, waited, waited and and saved all the ground I could.

“When I got clear she took off. Very nice."

Winner of Spinaway Stakes last September at Saratoga, Sweet Reason won for the fourth time in seven lifetime starts.

JUST A GAME STAKES: Canadian-trained Coffee Clique (Brian Lynch/Javier Castellano) got the better of a head-bobbing finish from Strathnaver.

A 4YO daughter of Medaglia d'Oro, Coffee Clique posted the sixth victory in 11 career starts, upsetting what was expected to be another showdown between Stephanie's Kitten and Better Lucky, the first and second place finishers in the Just A Game last year.

"A Grade I absolutely is the pinnacle for her," Lynch said. "She's a homebred, which makes that family so valuable, and she's just such a courageous filly.

“Just thrilled to see her dog it out like she did.

“Winning form is good form. She had won two in a row, she fit here today, and she ran like she belonged. God bless her."
