Tonalist In Dandy Form For Saratoga

Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist will have his first start since spoiling California Chrome’s Triple Crown bid in this weekend’s G2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga.

The $600,000 Jim Dandy over nine furlongs has also attracted Kentucky Derby runner-up Commanding Curve and G1 Wood Memorial winner Wicked Strong.

Tonalist, after finishing fourth in his only run at two, has raced only four times this year for three wins and a second.

The Christophe Clement-trained colt won the G2 Peter Pan Stakes in May before scoring an upset win in the Belmont Stakes.

Tonalist will use the Jim Dandy as a springboard to the prestigious G1 Travers Stakes at the same venue on August 23.

Ten of the last 16 Travers Stakes winners have come out of the Jim Dandy Stakes including four of the last five.

Clement said Tonalist has continued to progress since the Belmont, in which he stalked the early pace and gained steadily down the stretch to catch Commissioner by a head at the wire.

"I think he's fit, but I think he can move up from the race, too," he said.

"He had a break after the Belmont and he put on quite a bit of weight. He's been very playful and he thinks life is great.

“He's taking his work very well."

Wicked Strong, the Wood Memorial, dead-heated for fourth in the Belmont with California Chrome.

Trainer Jimmy Jerkens said Wicked Strong will race in blinkers after the colt tried them in his pre-race tuneup on July 19 over the Saratoga main track.

Wicked Strong made a belated run from mid-pack in the Belmont, leaving Jerkens displeased with his effort.

"I was a little disappointed. He ran okay, but I didn't think he ran as good as we thought he would," the trainer said.

"He was a little lackluster. All in all, I guess he finished slightly better than the rest of them did."

Commanding Curve, runner-up in the Kentucky Derby, was ninth of 11 in the Belmont last time out.

Commanding Curve is cross-entered in the Curlin Stakes but will start in the Jim Dandy.

• KENTUCKY Derby and Preakness Stakes winner California Chrome is being targeted at the Breeders’ Cup Classic later in the year.

Trainer Art Sherman reported: “The horse looks great, he’s put on weight.

“His foot (injured when fourth in the Belmont Stakes) is all healed. We jogged him and now we just hope everything goes well and we get him ready for the

Breeders’ Cup.”
