Chrome Prepares For Pennsylvania Derby

Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome has his first five-furlong workout since returning to training as he prepares for a return to racing in the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby on September 20.

The Derby will be the first start for California Chrome since finishing fourth in the Belmont Stakes in his bid to sweep the coveted Triple Crown after he also won the Preakness Stakes.

California Chrome worked on his own at his home track at Los Alamitos in California and satisfied his trainer Art Sherman with his work under regular jockey Espinoza.

"I thought the work was good," said Sherman. "I'm sure he's getting stronger.

California Chrome is to have two more timed workouts before the Pennsylvania Derby including a gallop between races during the Los Angeles County Fair meet at Los Almaitos on September 6.

"I need to get him tight enough to go a mile-and-an-eighth right off the bat," Sherman said. "My horse is a funny horse. You think he might not be tight enough but he does everything so easy that he'll surprise you."

Espinoza described California Chrome’s work as "not too bad”.

“He went nice and easy. Art told me just to stretch his legs a little bit and just get comfortable.

“It seems like he's getting there. I think each work he's getting better."

The Pennsylvania Derby is scheduled to be California Chrome's only race before tackling the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park on November 1.

California Chrome has won five of six starts in 2014 banking $3,317,800.

In addition to his victories in the Derby and Preakness he has also won the Santa Anita Derby and San Felipe Stakes this season.
