Derby Trio Set For Preakness Rematch

The three placegetters from the Kentucky Derby are set for a rematch in the Preakness Stakes, second leg of the US Triple Crown, at Pimlico on May 16.

Trainer Bob Baffert has confirmed that his Derby winner American Pharoah and third placed stablemate Dortmund would both be going on to the Preakness.

Simon Callaghan, the trainer of runner-up Firing Line, has also committed his colt to a Preakness start.

"As of right now, I don't see why not," Baffert told the media at Churchill Downs on Sunday as he showed off the Derby winner.

"We'll just have to see how they train next week."

He said Zayat Stables, which owns American Pharoah, and Dortmund's owner, Kaleem Shah, both deserve the opportunity.

Dortmund suffered his first loss in seven starts in the Derby after he made the pace.

Callaghan said Firing Line, who headed off Dortmund in the stretch before eventually finishing a length behind American Pharoah, could find the shorter distance of the Preakness more suitable to his running style.

"There was a point in the stretch when I thought we could win," Callaghan said.

"I'm really proud of the way he ran. I couldn't ask for any more. He came out of the race great."

Trainer Mark Casse is also evaluating the Preakness for Danzig Moon, who finished a troubled fifth after making a long run five wide rounding the second turn.

"We'll look at the Preakness," Casse said. "I was happy with how he ran in the Derby.

“He got knocked around. You have to give him credit for how well he ran."

Todd Pletcher is weighing up his next move with his three Derby starters Materiality (sixth), Itsaknockout (10th) and Carpe Diem (11th).
