Different Plans For US Stars

California Chrome is to race on in 2016, Triple Crown champion American Pharaoh has had his first workout at Del Mar and dual Horse of the Year Wise Dan is closing on his comeback to racing.

* US Horse of the Year California Chrome has had his retirement suspended and will race on in 2016.

Plans to retire California Chrome to stud at the end of 2015 after his 4YO season have been altered after setbacks derailed his campaign despite Taylor Made Stallions securing standing rights to the Kentucky Derby winner last week when they bought out the 30 percent interest held by part-owners Steve and Carolyn Copburn.

A cannon bone bruise has sidelined California Chrome for the rest of the year but trainer Art Sherman has announced plans for him to race again in 2016.

“It’s all coming together now,” Sherman said. “He’s coming back to California.”

The trainer said the dual classic winner will return to his base at Los Alamitos after a two months stay at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky.

“It feels good knowing that you’re going to have a nice 5-year-old horse in the handicap division, because so many have gone away,” Sherman said.

“Personally, it’s very gratifying for me. We missed so much with him this year.

“We didn’t get the chance I wanted to have with him. It will be great to have a game plan and go for it.”

* TRIPLE CROWN champion American Pharoah’s had his first workout on the dirt track at Del Mar on July 18 as he builds up to his expected next start in the G1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in New Jersey on August 2.

The three-year-old star recorded a six-furlong breeze in 1:11.4 over the seaside oval's dirt track with splits of 35.6; 47.2 and 59.6.

His six-furlong time was the fastest of 12 at the distance on the morning.

"He went good," reported trainer Bob Baffert. "It was a good work for him. He needed it."

Baffert refused to confirm the Haskell Invitational is on the agenda.

"No plans beyond today," the trainer said. "We just go step by step with this horse.

“I'm not sure when his next work will be - we just go day to day."

* WISE Dan, the dual Horse of the Year in 2012 and 2013 and a two-time winner of the G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile, is preparing for his comeback.

His is working strongly at Keeneland as he prepares for his first start since he won the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile last October.

Wise Dan sustained a non-displaced fracture at the bottom of the cannon bone of his right front fetlock after that win.

The gelding returned to trainer Charlie LoPresti’s barn at Keeneland in March and is edging closer to his comeback.

“I’m just really happy for him,” LoPresti said. “He wants to train, he wants to run.

“It’s a big relief to know he’s back. If he never runs again, at least I know he’s in good shape but I’m hoping to run him.”

Wise Dan has won 23 of his 31 starts and has earned $7,552,920.

He has won a record seven stakes races at Keeneland, including two runnings of the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile and G1 Maker’s 46 Mile.

Races that will be considered for Wise Dan include the G1 Woodbine Mile in September and Shadwell Turf Mile in October before the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland on October 31.

“We’ll see what happens, LoPresti said. “If he looks good we’ll keep going forward.”
