Wise Dan Prepares For September Comeback

Trainer Charlie LoPresti has earmarked a choice of two races for the September comeback of his two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan.

LoPresti is considering the G2 Bernard Baruch Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Saratoga on September 7 or the G1 Woodbine Mile on the Woodbine turf on September 13 for the eight-year-old.

LoPresti revealed his plans after Wise Dan stepped up from gallops on the Keeneland turf in July to breeze a fast five furlongs on the Keeneland main track last Sunday.

"We were really pleased with that work," said LoPresti.

The two races being considered for Wise Dan hare events he has previously won.

Wise Dan won the 2012 and 2013 editions of the Woodbine Mile and also last year's Bernard Baruch.

His ultimate target is this year's G1 Breeders' Cup Mile on Wise Dan's home course at Keeneland on October 31.

Wise Dan is returning from a fetlock injury, having been sidelined since last year's G1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland in October.

Meanwhile Shared Belief is continuing his recovery from a hip fracture at Pegasus Equine Rehabilitation and Training Center in Washington but still doesn't have a timetable for a return to racing according to his part owner Jason Litt.

The champion 2-year-old colt of 2013 and five-time G1 winner has been handwalking but still has significant rehab to undergo following his injury suffered during the G2 Charles Town Classic in April when having his first start outside California.

"He's going in the right direction and healing up nicely but there’s no timetable," Litt said.

"We're going to do everything we can to give him the best shot to come back. If that's six months or one year, that's what it will be."

"It would be fun to get a shot at American Pharaoh but we're going to do what's best for the horse.

"His prognosis is excellent, but we've been involved in racing long enough to know what can happen in this game.

"We're pointing to next year's Breeders' Cup but we're guarded because things go wrong all the time."
