Honour Code Wins Wihitney Stakes

Honor Code added the $1.25 million Whitney Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday to his G1 record with a dramatic win last stride win over pacesetter Liam’s Map.

The son of A.P. Indy, winner of the GI Metropolitan Hcp at Belmont on June 6 at his previous start, gave veteran trainer Shug McGaughey his first win in the Whitney since his champion Easy Goer captured the race in 1989.

“He’s a spectacular horse,” McGaughey said of Honour Code.

“He has been, really, from the start. He’s really grown into himself.

“To be able to win a race like the Whitney is a big feather in our cap.”

“People have always held him in high regard, but wondered if he could run around two turns.

“I guess he answered all that today. I’m glad it’s over and I’m glad we won so I don’t have to worry about that part of it.”

Liam’s Map took up the early lead while Honor Code raced at the rear some 15 lengths off the pacesetter.

Liam’s Map shrugged off the challenge of defending Whitney winner Moreno while Honor Code was still 12 lengths off the pacesetter turning for home.

He made up five lengths in the last furlong to reel in the tiring leader on the wire.

“That’s his style,” commented winning jockey Javier Castellano. “He ran unbelievable, like he always does.”

Tonalist, after racing with Honor Code through much of the race, closed off for third.

Honor Code made his a debut with a victory at Saratoga in 2013 and was in Triple Crown consideration after finishing runner-up effort in that year’s GI Champagne Stakes and a win in the G2 Remsen Stakes.

His sophomore campaign in 2014 began with a runner-up effort at Gulfstream before he was sidelined until wining at Aqueduct in November.

He opened 2015 with a win in the G2 Gulfstream Park Hcp and was fifth in the Alysheba Stakes before his win in the Met Mile.
