Travers Stakes Attracts 16 Entries

Triple Crown champion American Pharoah is among 16 horses nominated to the $1.25 million Travers Stakes at Saratoga on August 29.

Among the Travers nominees are a number of horses who have challenged the champion three-year-old in past races.

They including Keen Ice, seventh behind American Pharoah three times this year when seventh in the Kentucky Derby, third in the Belmont Stakes and second in the Haskell Invitational in their most recent meeting on August 2.

Others who came up short against American Pharoah in the Triple Crown races include Wood Memorial winner Frosted, who was fourth in the Kentucky Derby and second in the Belmont Stakes, and Preakness Stakes runner-up and Belmont Stakes seventh Tale Of Verve.

West Virginia Derby winner Madefromlucky, second to American Pharoah in the G2 Rebel Stakes and fourth behind him in the G1 Arkansas Derby, is another entry along with Upstart, who was 18th in the Derby and third in the Haskell.

Other nominees who have faced American Pharoah previously are Frammento, 11th in the Derby and fifth in the Belmont; Far Right, second in the Arkansas Derby and 15th in the Kentucky Derby; and Mr. Z, third in the Arkansas Derby, 13th in the Derby and fifth in the Preakness.

Also nominated also is Texas Red, the brilliant winner of last year’s Breeders Cup Juvenile who finished third to American Pharoah in the G1 FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita Park last September.

Texas Red did not go down the Triple Crown trail after suffering a foot bruise. He returned with a second in the G3 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park on July 4 and then posted a half-length victory over Frosted in the recent G2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga.

Among those who would be meeting American Pharoah for the first time in the Travers Stakes are Smart Transition and King Of New York, the first and third place finishers from the Curlin Stakes at Saratoga; Japan, who was third in the Jim Dandy; Tommy Macho, third in the Dwyer; Face Of Winner and a recent maiden winner Mid Ocean.

American Pharoah worked at Del Mar on August 16 in his first timed work since his runaway victory in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.

After the workout, trainer Bob Baffert said he would wait until he gives the colt another scheduled breeze next Sunday before making a final decision on whether to run the three-year-old in the Travers Stakes.
