Champion Shared Belief Dies After Colic Attack

US champion Shared Belief died suddenly on Thursday after suffering from a bout of colic.

He died at a San Francisco vet clinic after he underwent emergency colic surgery.

Shared Belief had recently returned to training at Golden Gate Fields after sustaining a hip fracture during the Charles Town Classic in April.

Part-owner Jim Rome said Shared Belief was rushed to the UC Davis Clinic after he showed signs of colic on Thursday morning.

“Emergency colic surgery was performed but doctors were unable to save him,” Rome said.

“We are still awaiting results of an autopsy. We are all absolutely devastated.”

“Shared Belief was a once in a lifetime horse. A champion, fighter and unbelievable talent who impacted and changed all of our lives.

“He was a super horse from day one. He would end up winning 10 of 12 starts, including five Grade Ones and an Eclipse Award.

“There will never be another like Shared Belief.”

Shared Belief was privately purchased by Rome’s Jungle Racing LLC, KMN Racing LLC, Jerry Hollendorfer, Jason Litt, Alex Solis and George Todaro after his debut victory at Golden Gate in 2013.

The gelding followed with wins in the 2013 G2 Hollywood Prevue and GI CashCall Futurity to clinch the Eclipse Award for top 2-year-old male.

Forced to miss the first half of his sophomore season due to foot issues, Shared Belief returned with an allowance victory at Golden Gate and captured the G2 Los Alamitos Derby in his first start on dirt six weeks later.

He defeating a field of talented older horses that included Game On Dude in Del Mar’s GI Pacific Classic last August and again bested his elders in Santa Anita’s GI Awesome Again Stakes.

He suffered his first defeat when a luckless fourth in the 2014 GI Breeders’ Cup Classic but went on to annex the GI Malibu Stakes last December.

He kicked off his 4-year-old season with a defeat of dual classic winner California Chrome in the G2 San Antonio Invitational in February and then added a victory in the GI Santa Anita Handicap a month later.

Shared Belief amassed a lifetime record of 12-10-0-0 and earnings of $2,932,200.
