Nyquist Ruled Out Of Belmont Stakes

Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist will miss the Belmont Stakes on June 11 due to a high blood count.

The Doug O’Neill stable confirmed his withdrawal on Tuesday, 24 hours after reporting the colt was running a temperature.

“He looked bright-eyed, but the blood work did come back that he is fighting something,” reported Dennis O’Neill, brother of trainer Doug O’Neill.

Blood tests were ordered on Monday, 48 hours after Nyquist suffered his first career loss when third in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.

Nyquist was treated on Monday but his temperature was still above normal on Tuesday morning.

Plans to ship Nyquist to from Baltimore to New York were put on hold pending the results of the blood work.

Doug O’Neill said Nyquist will remain in Baltimore until he is “100% healthy.”
