Nyquist Works; Untapable Retired

Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist has logged his first timed workout at Santa Anita since his first career loss when third in the Preakness Stakes.

Trainer Doug O'Neill was delighted after Nyquist ran a half-mile in 48.6 seconds, Santa Anita clockers timing the Uncle Mo colt through early fractions of 12.8 and 24.6 with a gallop out to five furlongs in 1:02 flat under regular exercise rider Jonny Garcia.

Nyquist returned to California on June 5 following an extended stay at Pimlico racecourse after a fever knocked him out of consideration for the Belmont Stakes.

"On his jog days, he's just bucking and playing," O'Neill said. "He's been really feeling good.”

As for an upcoming race target for Nyquist, O'Neill has adopted a wait-and-see stance.

With limited opportunities to race on dirt for 3-year-olds at Del Ma the trainer said a showdown with California Chrome in the G2 San Diego Handicap on July 23 could be a possibility.

"It's such an inexact thing," O'Neill said. "He probably had about 10 days of downtime and then we've exercised him every day since then so he hasn't missed a lot.

“The San Diego, even though it's older horses, is a possibility."

• Champion mare Untapable has been retired from racing.

Following a debut win at Churchill Downs with a victory in the 2013 G2 Pocahontas Stakes, Untapable won six out of seven starts as a 3YO.

She captured the G3 Rachel Alexandra and G2 Fair Grounds Oaks by a combined 17 1/4 lengths before taking the G1 Kentucky Oaks by 4 ½ lengths.

She then demolished the field by 9 1/4 lengths in the GI Mother Goose before suffering her first and only defeat of the season when fifth when facing males for the first time in Monmouth Park’s GI Haskell Invitational won by Bayern.

She was back to winning ways in the GI Cotillion Stakes at Parx and sealed the Eclipse Award for top sophomore filly with a decisive score in that year’s GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita.

Untapable scored just one victory in 2015, capturing Oaklawn’s GI Apple Blossom Hcp but hit the board in each of her six starts including the G1 Personal Ensign and G1 Spinster Stakes.

A fever forced her withdrawal from a title defense in the BC Distaff before trainer Steve Asmussen brought her back for a second when making her 2016 debut in Oaklawn’s G2 Azeri Stakes in March.

Untapable retires with a record of 20-9-5-2 and earnings of $3,926,625.

Breeding plans are yet to be confirmed.
