Saratoga - Frosted Chills Out For The Whitney

Godolphin star Frosted will come off a 56-day break to face five rivals in the $1.25 million Whitney Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin believes adding more time between races will deliver another big result for Frosted after his record-breaking win in the G1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont on June 11.

Frosted won the Met Mile by an amazing 14¼ lengths at his third start for the year after racing twice in Dubai where he won a G2 race in February followed 51 days later by a fifth in the Dubai World Cup won by California Chrome.

In his 3YO season last year Frosted started nine times with an average gap of 29 days between races with the highlights being his win in the G1 Wood Memorial and a placing in the G1 Belmont Stakes.

McLaughlin thinks Frosted has gone to another level this year and says it is the program he has adopted for the stylish grey.

“The time to the Met Mile was very important, 70 days. He was back with Joel Rosario, back with Lasix, but the timing was the most important thing,” McLaughlin said.

“Last year we were running often. Now we have time again, about eight weeks.

“He doesn't act like he needs it but it looks like he's better with a little time."

Frosted will try to become the second straight horse to sweep the Met Mile and Whitney, a double accomplished last year by Honor Code.

Nine horses have won the two races in the same season.

The obvious candidate to upset Frosted is Effinex, a five-time graded stakes winner who enters the Whitney off a second straight win in the G2 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park.

He thoroughly proven having won the G1 Clark Handicap and G1 Oaklawn Handicap over the Whitney distance of nine furlongs but he has a tendency to be inconsistent.

However he seems to do better with frequent racing and should be ready to roll in his third start since June 18.

His only race at Saratoga to date yielded a fourth in the 2015 Woodward Stakes.

The up-and-coming Comfort has only seven starts under his belt but brings a three-race win streak into the Whitney and unbeaten in two starts this year.

His trainer Todd Pletcher has enjoyed success with lightly raced horses in the Whitney as he won the 2013 renewal with Cross Traffic at only his fifth start and sent out Liam's Map for second in 2015 off a record that is very similar to Comfort.

Noble Bird was no match for Frosted when sixth in the Metropolitan after setting fast fractions but could capitalise on a slow pace as he did when romped to victory in the G3 Pimlico Special two starts back winning by 11¼ lengths.
