Jockey Club Gold Cup Next For Woodward Winner

Trainer Jimmy Jerkens is looking at the Jockey Club Gold Cup as the next start for Shaman Ghost after his upset win in the G1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga where he ended the winning run of Godolphin’s boom star Frosted.

Jerkens reported that Shaman Ghost was in good shape a day after his head victory over the Kiaran McLaughlin stablemates Mubtaahij and Frosted in the Woodward.

Shaman Ghost picked up his first G1 win and sixth career victory when he won the Woodward at his first attempt at 1 1/8 miles.

"It was good to see him throw in a good mile and an eighth because it is different from the other big races that he's won," said Jerkens.

"At the far turn the pace started to quicken and he had to be right there with them to do it.

“He responded so it was really good to see that. He's always been game.”

Jerkens said Shaman Ghost could have his next start in the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on October 8 as hius prep race for a tilt at the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita in Califonria in November.

"It's the next logical step. The big purse plus the mile and a quarter.

“The distance isn't a problem for him,” Jerkens said.

s in a nice rhythm the whole way."

Kiaran McLaughlin said he was far from discouraged by Frosted's effort as the 2-5 favorite after huge wins by panels at his previous two starts.

"He carried six more pounds than Mubtaahij, four more pounds than the winner, and ran 40 feet further than the winner," said McLaughlin.

"We feel like he was the best horse, but he got beat."

Plans for Frosted's next start have yet to be determined but Mubtaahij will be pointed to the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

"Mubtaahij ran great. He wants the mile and a quarter at Belmont,” McLaughlin said.
