Chad Brown Wins First Hollywood Derby

Trainer Chad Brown had never accounted for the winner of the GI Hollywood Derby but in the span of about 107 seconds that all changed at Santa Anita on Saturday thanks to his stablemates Annals Of Time and Beach Patrol.

Annals of Time scythed his way through the field before kicking impressively clear to hand Brown’s GI Secretariat Stakes hero Beach Patrol a 1.5 lengths beating.

Drawn one from the outside in stall 11, Annals of Time was away in good order as Blackjackcat set an even pace to the inside of longshot Defiantly.

Javier Castellano had Annals of Time settled third or fourth last for the run down the backside with the 5-1 fourth choice traveling sweetly on the turn and ready to pounce.

Beach Patrol launched what looked to be a winning move three wide but Annals of Time jumped into the bridle and gained sharply through the narrowest of openings nearing the eighth pole.

With nothing but daylight ahead from that point, it was academic as Annals of Time hit the line hard.

“I tried to save ground as much as I could,” said Castellano, riding Annals of Time for the first time.

“I give Chad Brown all the credit for shipping out a young horse like this…a horse making only his fourth start–and shipping him to the west coast and having him ready to run a race like this.

“He was powerful. When I asked him he put in a powerful kick and he galloped out strong and straight.

“Distance will be no problem with him.”

Brown’s assistant trainer Cherie DeVaux said: “He’s lightly raced, he had some minor issues to deal with before we could get him started, so he was the fresher of our three.

“It’s important for us to get the lay of the land for Breeders’ Cup here next year. Chad really wanted to come, but he had a family obligation in New York.”

Annals Of Time, an $80,000 graduate of the 2014 Fasig-Tipton October sale, debuted with a win over future graded winner Inspector Lynley at Aqueduct last November.

He was absent for nine months before a fast-finishing second, beaten a head, in a Saratoga allowance in September and acquitted himself nicely trying graded-stakes company for the first time when third in the G3 Hill Prince Stakes at Belmont behind fellow Brown trainees Camelot Kitten and Beach Patrol.
