Castellano And Brown Top US Money Lists

Javier Castellano has finished 2016 as the leading rider in America by earnings for the fourth straight year.

Castellano won 300 races from 1,418 mounts, ending the year with earnings of $US26,827,966.

Runner-up for the second consecutive year was Irad Ortiz Jr., who had 313 wins from 1504 mounts and earnings of $US23,456,741.

Castellano, who has earned the Eclipse Award each year since 2013 and is among the favorites for 2016, recorded G1 wins aboard New Money Honey (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf), Cathryn Sophia (Kentucky Oaks), Flintshire (Sword Dancer Invitational/Manhattan stakes), Cavorting (Personal Ensign Stakes), Shaman Ghost (Woodward Stakes), Connect (Cigar Mile), Sweet Loretta (Spinaway Stakes) and Annals of Time (Hollywood Derby).

In terms of wins Jose Ortiz finished first with 351 victories followed by Antonio Gallardo (332); Irad Ortiz Jr (313); Castellano (300) and Juan C. Diaz (289).

The 351 wins by Jose Ortiz is the most in a single season by a North American-based rider since 2013 when Castellano registered 362.

Chad Brown moved to the top of the leading trainers in America by earnings for the first time after second place finishes in 2014 and 2015.

Brown sent out the winners of 182 races from 763 starters for earnings of $US23,135,084.

A feature of results was his impressive record on turf, leading all trainers for the fifth consecutive year with a record of 128 wins from 573 starts on grass and earnings of $US16,297,744.

Brown's won 12 G1 races with New Money Honey (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf), Flintshire (Sword DancerInvitational/Manhattan stakes), Sea Calisi (Beverly D. Stakes), Lady Eli (Flower Bowl Stakes), Dacita (Diana Stakes), Connect (Cigar Mile), Practical Joke (Champagne Stakes/Hopeful stakes), Beach Patrol (Secretariat Stakes), Wake Forest (Man o' War Stakes), and Annals Of Time ( Hollywood Derby).

Todd Pletcher, who has led the earnings list 10 times, finished second with his horses winning 274 races from 1213 starts for earnings of $US21,178,642.

Topping the list by wins for a third straight year was Karl Broberg, who earned 367 victories. He was followed by Steve Asmussen (317), Pletcher (274), Robertino Diodoro (242) and Mark Casse (235).
