A deal has been put in place that will see the connections of Gun Runner partner with Ruis Racing to give the three-year-old a start in next weekend’s $12 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park in Florida.

Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm own Gun Runner but is likely to make the Pegasus World Cup in Ruis Racing’s starting gate spot.

With quarantine precuations that were put in place after an outbreak of equine herpes about to be lifted at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans, co-owner Ron Winchell believes he has cleared all hurdles and will be able to start Gun Runner at Gulfstream.

Winchell said he has not had any discussions with officials at the Fair Grounds or the Louisiana Racing Commission but understands horses can leave the Fair Grounds from January 21.

Winchell owns the G1-winning colt in partnership with Three Chimneys Farm.

“He will have one more work at the Fair Grounds and we’’ll leave shortly after that,” Winchell said.

“As soon as we can get out we’’ll go to Florida. Hopefully, there will be no glitches going forward.”

Gulfstream officials must still agree to allow Gun Runner onto the grounds, but with the herpes scare no longer a factor in New Orleans that does not seem to be an issue.

Winchell was hoping Gun Runner could work at Gulfstream before the Pegasus World Cup but that is no longer in the plans.

“He’s training so well and doing so great I don’t see it being a factor that he is going to get there late,” he said.

Winchell said he had been close to making a World Cup deal with another shareholder but it fell through because of Gun Runner’s situation.

Ruis Racing was set to enter War Envoy but have a better chance with Gun Runner, who is coming off a win in the GI Clark Handicap and is likely be the third choice in the betting behind California Chrome and Arrogate.

“With those two guys in the race I know it will be a steep task and we might be running for third money but if our horse jumps up and the other two falter we can take advantage of that,” Winchell said.
