KENTUCKY DERBY - Godolphin's Thunder Snow Arrives At Churchill Downs

UAE Derby winner Thunder Snow has arrived at Chuchil Downs to prepare for next weekend’s Kentucky Derby.

Godolphin-owned Thunder Snow, the winner of the UAE Derby at Meydan in Dubai on March 25, is a son of the Australian G1 winner Helmet.

“Sheikh Mohammed has made the decision to run Thunder Snow in the Kentucky Derby,” trainer Saeed bin Suroor said.

“Thunder Snow has improved a lot and it would be brilliant to see him run well," bin Suroor said

“The horse is in good form. He is sound, healthy and I am so happy with him.

“It is great to see another horse from Godolphin travel to the Kentucky Derby, as it is one of the best races in the world.”

Bin Suroor has started six 3YOs in previous Kentucky Derbys for Godolphin. His best result was a sixth with China Visit behind Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000.

However Godolphin's best finish in the Kentucky Derby came in 2015 when the Kiaran McLaughlin-trained Frosted ran fourth behind eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.

Thunder Snow ended his 2YO season with a win in the G1 Criterium International over 1400m at Saint-Cloud in France and did not run again until the G3 UAE 2000 Guineas on the Meydan dirt course in February, winning by almost six lengths.

Godolphin paid the $US6000 late nomination fee for the US Triple Crown a week before Thunder Snow's UAE Derby victory.

Thunder Snow arrived in Kentucky on Sunday after spending two days in quarantine following his flight from Dubai.

Champion French jockey Christophe Soumillon will ride Thunder Snow in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.
