Arrogate beaten in major upset

In a shock result US champion Arrogate has finished fourth in the G2 San Diego Stakes at Del Mar.

The only horse ranked higher than Australian star in the world rankings Winx, Arrogate went to the post as the short-priced favourite but was struggling a long way out in the race won by Accelerate.

Jockey Mike Smith appeared to ease up on Arrogate who finished a distant fourth.

Accelerate held the distinction of being one of two horses to cross the wire in front of Arrogate in a maiden race in 2016 and completed the feat again with this upset of epic proportions.

Arrogate broke slowly and never picked up, trailing the field behind in the first half mile and offering nothing when called on entering the turn.

Accelerate, with blinkers added to his gear, was strong in front and ran away to a devastating eight-length victory.

Accelerate won the G2 Los Alamitos Derby in 2016 and finished the year with a third in the GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.
